Windows Update has failed with error 643 (unknown error) on 17 efforts this past month to update to Microsoft .NET framework 4.7.2. Have tried every solution I could locate via Web searches on this problem, including Microsoft's Windows Update Troubleshooter (3 times now from separate recommendations). Believe this failure is also now responsible for unknown error with HP Advisor on each reboot that forces me to close down that program, as Advisor appears to require .NET framework for its operation.

After downloading the 2 executables and 1 msi from the catalog for updating Microsoft .NET framework to 4.7.2, I noticed that the KB identifiers there were different than that listed by Windows Update. So I Googled one of them: kb4087364 which lead me to "https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/windows-update-shows-error-code-8..." and a reply reading:
The problem/error you have is an out of date SID. To resolve this error follow these steps.
1. open Control Panel, select windows update. In the main window select and view "Important update
are available", uncheck all updates then only select the update that failed as mentioned above
(KB4340556)
2. within the same window, select Change Settings left side menu, in the drop down box select "Check
for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"
check - Recommended updates
uncheck - Who can install updates
check - Microsoft Update
check - Software notifications
at bottom of window select OK, then at very top left click Back. Do not close window...
3. Go to Start / Search and type Windows Explorer, Navigate to below mentioned folder-
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA
You will see a folder named "S-1-5-18" right click this folder and select rename, rename folder to "S-1-
5-18.BAK" click OK, another dialog will appear click continue.
4. Open Windows Update and install that update.
So I did followed these steps and ... Viola! ... Windows Update was SUCCESSFULL this time.
Subsequently I rebooted in hopes that the "HP Advisor has stopped working" message at bootup would disappear as well. No such luck. After several attempts to resolve that via HP Support's website, where even HP Support Solutions Framework installation resulted in "HPSSFUpdater has stopped working" and closed without a solution. Frustrated with HP Support, I simply uninstalled both HP Advisor and HP Support Solutions Framework and now can live in peace.
There are many searchable instances of "HP Advisor stopped working" problems on-line. So far none of the solutions have worked. If anyone has a recent success resolving this, please let me know. Thanks.

4.7.2 is valid update release. Have already tried the off-line install, which also failed. 4.7.1 was updated months ago:
Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1 on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (KB4074906)
Installation date: 2/17/2018 7:51 AM Installation status: Successful Update type: Optional
But thanks for ref to Microsoft Update Catalog. Have downloaded 3 files from link above and will try those, then update here with outcome.
