I upgraded my Bios to 01.02.25 and I wish to rolback to 0.1.02.17. Every time I try to do this I receive the following message;

"Bios update denied by system policy. Cancelling the Bios update."

How do i work around this issue?

Hi @GERARD11223344,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The error message “BIOS update denied by system policy” when trying to roll back from version 01.02.25 to 01.02.17 is typically caused by HP’s rollback protection, which is part of newer BIOS security policies, especially on HP+ and commercial systems.

Why Rollback Is Blocked

HP introduced BIOS rollback prevention in certain updates to protect against vulnerabilities. Once a newer BIOS version is installed, the system may lock out older versions unless rollback is explicitly allowed in the firmware.

1. Check for Rollback Option in BIOS

  • Restart your PC and press Esc → then F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Look under Security → BIOS Rollback Policy or Advanced → Firmware Management.
  • If available, enable rollback or disable rollback protection.
  • Save and exit.

⚠️ Not all systems have this option. If it's missing, rollback is likely blocked permanently by the firmware.

2. Use HP BIOS Recovery Tool

If rollback is allowed, you can try restoring an older BIOS using a USB recovery drive:

  • Download BIOS version 01.02.17 from HP’s support site for your model.
  • Use the HP BIOS Update utility to create a recovery USB:
    • Format a USB drive to FAT32
    • Copy the BIOS .exe file and run it to extract files
    • Boot your PC and press Windows + B while pressing the power button
    • Hold for 2–3 seconds, then release power but keep holding Windows + B
    • Wait for the HP BIOS Update screen to appear

3. Check HP Sure Start

If your PC has HP Sure Start, rollback is not supported. Sure Start automatically repairs and locks BIOS versions for security.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
