Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I bought a hp 460-p089ng computer that had some bios issue error from Linux journalctl, so i decided to update the ancient bios on it. Everything went well, it said the update is succesful, but during booting its stuck at the screen where it says some hardware specs and says press esc fro startup options. On this screen nothing works its just stuck. (the version number is the new one , so it should be updated) I figured out that if i disconnect the ssd i will be able to enter bios or boot into a usb drive like windows installer or even ubuntu(boots and works fine).

Unfortunately its not the ssd that is bad cause i tried installing a brand new one, but same effect.

There is no update bios option available in bios or system diagnostics, i tried updating with bios update burned to an usb drive and pressing windows key + B on startup, but that results with a series of beeps followed by different beeps while having a blank screen and it does nothing.

I tried reseting the bios in many ways, even changed battery, used the pin jumper method, but other than changing the language to German it didn't work.

My last hope is to make a bootable windows usb (if that's possible) and update bios again from there and hope it fixes the problem or find my usb sata drive adapter and check if that will make it possible to boot up.

Is there anything else that i can do?  I don't want to give up on it yet.

A quick update:

I managed to install windows on the ssd by plugging it in a usb to sata converter.

I cant update bios on it cause when i do it restarts, but does not detect the ssd.

I have a pcie sata card installed that obviously does not get detected on startup, so i cant use it, but while in windows it works fine.

It seems like the sata controller part of my bios is messed up and makes it impossible to update. Very disappointing experience.

Hi @Laroisien,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your computer is unable to boot after a BIOS update, there are a few steps you can take to try and resolve the issue.

  • Clear the CMOS: This can often fix issues related to BIOS updates. To clear the CMOS, you'll need to locate the CMOS jumper on your motherboard (refer to your motherboard manual for instructions). Once you've located the jumper, turn off your computer and move the jumper to the "Clear" position. Wait a few seconds and then move the jumper back to its original position. Turn on your computer and see if it boots.
  • Reset the BIOS settings: Sometimes, the BIOS update can change the settings in your BIOS, which can cause boot issues. To reset the BIOS settings, you'll need to enter the BIOS setup utility (refer to your motherboard manual for instructions) and look for an option to reset the settings to their default values.
  • Flash the BIOS again: It's possible that the BIOS update didn't install correctly or that the file was corrupted. Try flashing the BIOS again using a different USB drive and make sure to follow the instructions carefully.

It's important to note that BIOS updates can be risky and should only be performed if you're experiencing a specific issue that the update is meant to fix. If your computer is working fine, it's generally not necessary to update the BIOS.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
