The brightness adjustment is greyed out and cannot be adjusted.  How do I go about changing this so I can adjust the brightness?

Hi @Comclare,

I understand your brightness adjustment is greyed out and you cannot change it. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check if adaptive brightness is enabled
Go to Settings > System > Display and see if Change brightness automatically when lighting changes is on. Turn it off and see if brightness becomes adjustable.

Update display drivers
Outdated or missing graphics drivers often cause the brightness slider to be greyed out. Open Device Manager > Display Adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver. You can also download the latest driver from HP Support or Intel/NVIDIA/AMD websites.

Check power plan settings
Go to Control Panel > Power Options and click Change plan settings next to your active plan. Click Change advanced power settings, expand Display, and ensure Enable adaptive brightness is off for both battery and plugged-in modes.

Restart your laptop
Sometimes a simple restart is required after driver updates or changes in power settings for the brightness controls to become active.

Check BIOS/UEFI settings
In rare cases, the display brightness control can be disabled in BIOS/UEFI. Restart your laptop, enter BIOS (usually pressing F10 at startup), and check if there’s a brightness or display control option.

Check for Windows updates
Ensure your system is fully updated: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Some updates include fixes for display and brightness controls.

I hope this helps.
