My laptop's brightness is too dim and nothing is visible without flashlight or torch. It happened after an update. I tried to reset it but now it's stuck at 64%. How do I fix it?

Hi @Wdyjnvgthj,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how concerning it is when your laptop screen becomes so dim that you need a flashlight to see it. Let’s break this down and get you back to a working display.

1. Try External Display (if available)

Connect your laptop to a monitor or TV using HDMI. If the external display works:

  • The issue is likely with the internal screen or backlight.
  • You can complete the reset or troubleshoot from the external screen.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

This can help clear temporary glitches:

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power and try turning it on.

3. Boot into Safe Mode

If the screen is barely visible, try this:

  • Power on and press F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly.
  • If Safe Mode loads, brightness may return to normal.
  • From there, uninstall recent display drivers or updates.

4. Check BIOS Brightness Settings

Sometimes BIOS updates reset brightness settings:

  • Power on and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Look for Display or Brightness settings.
  • Restore defaults and save.

4. Use HP Recovery USB (if reset is stuck)

If your reset is stuck at 64%, you may need to:

  • Create a Windows 11 recovery USB from another PC.
  • Boot from it and choose Repair your computer.

You can download the recovery media here:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
