HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-3000i (4M0K0AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, my desktop HP Pavilion Desktop TP01-3xxx has an optical drive and it's new.  I used the drive probably 4 times but now suddenly, it doesn't read anything, it doesn't come up in windows explorer.  I can't install drivers for my printer or a webcam that I have.  Anyone have any thoughts of why the drive is suddenly not reading?  Thank you.

Hi @Pearl1961,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue with your optical drive not being recognized could be due to a software or hardware issue. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Check if the Drive is Detected in BIOS

  • Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F10, Esc, or Del during startup).
  • Check if the optical drive is listed under the boot options or storage devices.
  • If it's not listed, the issue could be hardware-related.

2. Run the Windows Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

  • Press Windows + R, type msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic, and press Enter.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter and check for issues with the optical drive.

3. Verify in Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives and check if your optical drive is listed.
    • If it has a yellow warning symbol, right-click and choose Update Driver or Uninstall Device, then restart your computer.
    • If it’s not listed, try scanning for hardware changes by clicking Action > Scan for hardware changes.

4. Check Registry for UpperFilters and LowerFilters

  • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  • Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • Look for UpperFilters and LowerFilters on the right panel. If present:
    • Right-click on them and select Delete.
    • Restart your computer.

5. Test with a Bootable CD/DVD

  • Insert a bootable CD/DVD (e.g., Windows installation disc).
  • Restart your PC and boot from the CD/DVD (change the boot order in BIOS if needed).
  • If the system boots successfully from the disc, the issue may be software-related in Windows.

6. Update or Reinstall Drivers

  • Go to the HP support website and download the latest chipset and optical drive firmware (if available) for your model.
  • Install these updates and restart your system.

7. Physical Inspection

  • Eject the drive and inspect for any physical obstructions or damage.
  • Clean the lens gently with a lens cleaning kit or compressed air.

8. Try an External USB Optical Drive

  • If the internal drive still doesn't work, test with an external USB optical drive to confirm if the issue is isolated to the internal drive.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Gaya 1239, thanks for the response and instructions.  Unfortunately, I got to a brick wall pretty quickly.  I typed in bio/uefi in the search area of my computer, bottom left and it came up w/instructions.  Go into settings, go into go into Update & security.  I went into "settings", but the below screenshot is what came up.  Is anything in the screen shot correct to go into.  Hope this makes sense.  Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your response.  One thing, though.  Please screen shot.  It reads to restart my computer and enter the settings or by pressing F10, Esc or Del.  I pressed all three of these; but nothing happened.  If you would send me a visual of where I type the words BIOS/UEFI, that would be helpful.  When I typed those words, it brought me to a website, is this correct?  Thank you.
