Hello. This computer was given to me, so I don’t have the manual or the original packaging. I’m not even sure if I have all of the pieces to it. My problem:
I plugged in every cord I had been given when I got the computer and turned on the monitor. As soon as I turn it on, I get a pop up that says
Monitor Status
VGA Input: No Input Signal
HDMI Input: No Input Signal
Recommended Settings: 1680x1050 - 60Hz
Then another message saying
Monitor Going to Sleep
And then I can't do anything at all. The keyboard and mouse won’t connect to it and when I push one of the buttons at the bottom of the monitor, it will wake it up only to repeat the Going to Sleep message and that’s it. I’ve tried googling options but every result keeps telling me to turn off sleep mode by going into the settings. But I can’t even get past the Going to Sleep message. I’m a total noob when it comes to tech, so I have no idea what’s going on. Please help. Thank you.

Hi @DisneySmurf
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're having an issue where the monitor is not receiving a proper signal from the computer and then goes to sleep, which prevents you from accessing the settings. This can be frustrating, but we can try a few troubleshooting steps to identify and solve the problem. Let's walk through these steps methodically to get you back on track.
1. Check the Cable Connections
The "No Input Signal" message typically means that the monitor is not receiving a signal from the computer. This could be due to an issue with the cables or connections.
Ensure all cables are properly connected:
- Double-check the cable connections between the monitor and the computer. Make sure the VGA, HDMI, or DisplayPort cable (depending on which one you're using) is securely plugged into both the monitor and the computer. If you're using HDMI, for instance, ensure it's plugged in fully at both ends.
- Try a different cable if possible. If you have another HDMI or VGA cable available, swap the cable to see if it's a faulty cable.
Check the input source on the monitor:
- Your monitor may have multiple input sources (e.g., VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort). Make sure that your monitor is set to the correct input source.
- Use the monitor's on-screen menu to select the correct input:
- Typically, you can press the "Menu" button on the monitor itself (usually located on the bottom or side of the monitor), and use the navigation buttons to go to the Input Source settings.
- Ensure it is set to the appropriate input type (HDMI, VGA, etc.) that matches the cable connected to your computer.
2. Check the Computer’s Output
The problem might be with the computer's display settings or it could be an issue with the computer's graphics card or GPU.
Ensure the computer is turned on and functional:
- If the computer is in sleep mode or powered off, the monitor will not receive any signal. Try powering on the computer (you should see lights or hear a sound indicating it's powered on).
- If your computer is a laptop, try connecting the monitor to the laptop and using the keyboard shortcut to switch the output to the external monitor. On most laptops, this is done by pressing a function key (e.g., Fn + F4 or Fn + F8).
Try restarting the computer:
- Sometimes a quick restart can resolve issues if the monitor isn't detecting the signal properly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
