I have a 34" HP curved monitor 5 Series monitor and cannot get the camera to be recognized.  Has anyone been able to solve for this in the Mac OS?

Welcome to the HP Community! I am a new volunteer here participating in the HP Solve-a-thon, and I can definitely help you get the built-in webcam on your 34" curved monitor communicating properly with your Mac.

 

Because HP monitors are primarily designed with Windows in mind, macOS doesn't automatically configure the camera out of the box. There are no drivers to download for Mac; instead, fixing this comes down to how the monitor is cabled and a specific quirk with how Apple software reads HP's camera lenses.

 

Here is the exact way to get it recognized:

 

1. You must connect the USB upstream cable

If you are only connecting the monitor to your Mac using an HDMI or standard DisplayPort cable, the camera will never be recognized. Those cables only transmit video and audio. To transmit webcam data back to the computer, you must connect the included USB-C cable (or a USB Type-B to Type-A upstream cable) between the monitor and your Mac.

 

2. Switch the camera from IR to HD

Once the USB cable is connected, macOS will often try to default to the monitor's infrared sensor (which is meant for Windows Hello facial recognition) instead of the actual webcam lens. This results in a black screen or inverted, flickering colors.

 

  • Open FaceTime or Photo Booth.

  • Go to the Video menu at the very top of your Mac's menu bar.

  • Under the camera list, switch the selection from HP IR Camera to HP HD Camera.

 

3. Check Mac Privacy Permissions

If the camera is plugged in via USB but still won't show up in a specific app like Zoom or Teams, Apple's security might be blocking it. Open your Mac's System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera, and make sure the toggle next to the app you are trying to use is switched on.

 

Let me know if connecting that secondary USB cable and switching the lens to HD does the trick for you!
