Am trying to reset my laptop through cloud recovery. But hp has been rejecting my serial number which I got through command prompt because the last part of the serial number which came with the laptop is bloated with some paint like substance at the back surface . My product ID is ok.

Hi:
You don't need the serial number to use the cloud recovery tool if your notebook is supported by it.
You just need the full product number including the 3 letters after the # sign.
I don't know why you mentioned W8.1, but if your notebook originally came with W8.1, it is not supported by the HP cloud recovery tool.
Only certain model PC's that came with W10 and were made in 2016 or later are supported.
