Pavillion 500-320qe
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I had set up my Pavillion desktop to back up files to an external hard drive. At some point, it stopped doing this (something I just discovered). I can't find a way to restart this. Please provide guidance. Thanks.

@Marian-Designs -- Then it stopped

Can you read any files from the external device?  If not, the unit has failed.

Some of the cases can be disassembled, without destruction, to expose two major components: a USB to disk-drive adapter, and a disk-drive.  Disconnect the disk-drive, and connect a compatible replacement.

Close the case. Now, you should have a working device.  Note that an "empty" external case is $30 to $40 -- no disk-drive, until you add one.  So, if you destroy the case while opening it, a complete new external device will need to be purchased.

@Marian-Designs -- did it stop because the external disk-drive has become "full" ?

Or, has the external disk-drive "failed", preventing any backups from being written?

It was backing up on this external hard drive fine until 2017. Then it stopped. I don't know why. I also manually back up my documents/pictures/songs to another external hard drive.

I'll follow your advice. It's nice and clear. Thanks so much!

Itsmyname, sorry for the late follow-up. I have health problems that delay me.

I determined that the external hard drive I thought I'd set up for backups has never backed up. However, the files that I manually backed up on the same drive are openable/readable.

I opened Settings > Backup and attempted to set up this external hard drive for backup. I received this error message: "Could not enable File History: The service cannot be started, either b/c it is disabled or b/c it has no enabled devices associated w/ it." However, the drive is plugged in and working.

What do I try next?

Thanks,

Marian

@Marian-Designs -- when I launch Backup, I see:

Does your backup-drive show in the place where my "E:" drive-letter is displayed?
