My diagnostics are not up to date but I don't know how to get off of the error message screen to download an update.

Hi @KylaCurcio

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If you're stuck on an HP PC Hardware Diagnostics screen (usually blue or black background) and it's showing an error message about outdated diagnostics, here’s how you can get past it to update the tool:

First: Try to Exit the Diagnostics Screen

Press one of the following keys (depending on what you see on the screen):

Esc – Usually exits the diagnostics tool.

F2 – Sometimes returns to the main menu.

Ctrl + Alt + Del – Restarts the computer.

Power button (hold for 10 seconds) – Force shutdown.

Once you're back in Windows, you can update the HP Diagnostics.

Update HP Diagnostics (Once Back in Windows)

Go to HP’s official site:
https://www.hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDiags

Download the latest version of:

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows (runs inside Windows), or

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI (runs outside of Windows, from BIOS)

Follow the installation instructions.

If You Can't Boot into Windows

If you're stuck in a diagnostics loop or error and can’t reach Windows, do this from another computer:

Download HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI from:
https://www.hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDiags

Use a USB drive:

Insert USB into working computer.

Run the installer and choose to install to USB.

Once complete, insert USB into your HP computer.

Boot from USB:

Power on the HP computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly.

Select F9 (Boot Device Options).

Choose your USB drive.

This will run the updated diagnostics version from the USB.

Let me know what your screen currently says or if you're stuck at a specific message — I can guide you more precisely.
