Hello. How do I download photos from my camera to my HP computer or to an external hard drive? When I try it always defaults to an H drive which only has 5GB of space.

Thanks.

Hi @MrDaveC,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To download photos from your camera to your HP computer or an external hard drive, you can follow these general steps.

  • Connect Your Camera: Connect your camera to your computer using a USB cable or by inserting the camera's memory card into a card reader connected to your computer.
  • Turn On Your Camera: Ensure that your camera is turned on and in the correct mode for data transfer. Some cameras have a specific mode for transferring files.
  • Locate Your Camera or Memory Card: After connecting your camera or inserting the memory card, your computer should detect it as a removable storage device. It may appear as a new drive in Windows File Explorer.
  • Access Your Photos: Open File Explorer on your computer. You should see your camera or memory card listed as a drive. Double-click on it to open it and access your photos.
  • Select and Copy Photos: Browse through your camera's storage or memory card to locate the photos you want to download. You can select multiple photos by holding down the Ctrl key (Cmd key on Mac) while clicking on them. Then, right-click and choose "Copy."
  • Choose Destination: Now, navigate to the location where you want to save the photos. If you want to save them to your HP computer's internal hard drive, select the desired folder. If you want to save them to an external hard drive, ensure it is connected and select the appropriate folder on the external drive.
  • Paste Photos: Right-click in the destination folder and choose "Paste" to copy the selected photos from your camera/memory card to your computer or external hard drive.
  • Verify the Transfer: Once the transfer is complete, verify that the photos have been successfully copied to the chosen location.
  • Eject the Camera or Memory Card: Safely eject the camera or memory card from your computer to ensure that no data is lost during removal.

If your computer is defaulting to an "H drive" with limited space, it's possible that this is a designated drive for system files or temporary storage. In this case, make sure you select a different destination folder on your computer's internal hard drive or your external hard drive when copying the photos. You can create a new folder in a location with more storage space if needed.

Remember to periodically back up your photos to an external hard drive or cloud storage to prevent data loss.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
