Upon startup, the startup screen shows the HP logo and is stretched across the screen as if there were 2 monitors. When I access the BIOS, it is also stretched across the screen so that I can only see the left half. How can I fix this?

Hi @CPatafio,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The issue you’re describing HP logo and BIOS screen stretched across the display so only half is visible, is typically caused by a resolution mismatch between the BIOS graphics output and your monitor’s native resolution, or a scaling/EDID problem. Here’s how to fix it:

Why This Happens

  • BIOS uses a low-level graphics mode (often 1024×768 or similar).
  • If the monitor or GPU driver forces an ultra-wide resolution or incorrect scaling, the BIOS screen gets stretched.
  • Common after:
    • Connecting a new monitor
    • Updating graphics drivers
    • Changing display settings in Windows

Fix Steps

1. Check Physical Connections

  • Ensure the monitor is connected directly to the primary video output (HDMI/DisplayPort on the motherboard or GPU).
  • If you’re using an adapter (HDMI → VGA), try a direct digital connection.

2. Reset BIOS Display Settings

  • Power off → Press Esc repeatedly → Enter BIOS.
  • If the screen is still stretched, press F9 (Load Defaults) → F10 (Save & Exit).

3. Update BIOS

  • Download the latest BIOS for HP Envy Desktop 700-406: 👉 Official HP® Support
  • Install using HP Support Assistant or USB BIOS update.

4. Update Graphics Drivers

5. Disable Overscan / Scaling

  • On your monitor’s settings menu, look for Aspect Ratio or Scaling.
  • Set to Auto or 1:1 (not Stretch or Fill).

6. Test with Another Monitor

  • If possible, connect a different monitor temporarily to confirm if the issue is monitor-related.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi Vikram,

Sorry I haven't replied sooner.

I've tried all your suggestions (except for another monitor as I don't have one) and none have worked. I forgot to tell you that I actually have 2 almost identical Envy Desktop 700-406 systems connected to the same monitor via an HDMI switch box. One is my original PC the other belonged to a friend who purchased it at the same date and location as mine. He outgrew it and gave it to me recently.

My system has no problem when it boots up. It's the second system who's boot screen is shifted far right (partially off the screen). When he had the system, he had 2 monitors connected to it. I can see where that might cause an issue once the OS starts. But this issue is pre-OS so the drivers haven't kicked in yet.

Once the OS (Windows 11 Home on the second PC), the display is perfect!

This is more annoying than anything else. If you have any other suggestions, I'd certainly welcome them!

Thanks again,

Clem
