Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I can't find a way of setting the function keys on this wireless keyboard to default as F1, F2, F3 etc instead of the media control functions.

I tried pressing FN+ESC, FN+Caps Lock, neither of these seem to change the default. As such I always have to hold down the FN key if I want to press F1, F2, F3 etc.

Anyone know how or if it is possible to change this setting?

First ensure the Notebook has the latest BIOS. Link: https://support.hp.com/au-en/products/

Try change the action key setting from the BIOS Setup Utility.

  1. Press and hold the Power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press the f10 key repeatedly to open the BIOS Setup Utility.

  3. Press the right or left arrow key to select the System Configuration menu.

  4. Press the up or down arrow key to select Action Keys Mode.

  5. Press the Enter key to display the Enabled / Disabled options.

BIOS setup window with the System Configuration option and Action Keys Mode selected

  6. Press the up or down arrow key to select one of the options.

    • Enabled: Does not require pressing fn to use the actions printed on the function keys.

For example, pressing f8 lowers the sound as printed on the key. Alternately, pressing both the fn + f8 minimizes and maximizes a web browser.

    • Disabled: Requires pressing fn to use the actions printed on the function keys.

For example, pressing f1 opens a help window. Alternately, pressing both the fn + f1 keys puts the computer to sleep as printed on the key.

  7. Press the f10 key to save the selection and restart the computer.

Hi KrazyToad, this is a desktop (all-in-one) computer with a wireless keyboard, not a laptop.

I have looked in the BIOS for the machine and not found any settings for Action Keys or function keys.

As it's a wireless keyboard I suspect if there is a setting on here to disable the action key default it will be in the keyboard rather than the computer. I've done a few searches online for the keyboard product number (TPC-L001K or 928511-031) and haven't found any documentation for it.

@8bitnitwit,

There is no option to change or disable the media keys and make functions as default and it is by design.

I hope that answers your question.
