I'm trying to program the HP430 PROGRAMABLE number pad, but it is not allowing me to program tab to one of the buttons.
I click on the "start recording" and it will recognize keystrokes from the HP430, but does not recognize ANY keys from my laptop's keyboard. I've tried this on two different computers. I've restarted, uninstalled, reset to defaults, changed networks, disconnected all other devices, etc.
What it seems to be doing is telling me the ONLY buttons that I can assign to these extra buttons are the NUMBERPADs 1-9 buttons. Which is a ridiculous false advertisement if that's true.

Hi @khcvchy,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
It seems like you're facing a frustrating issue with programming the HP 430 Programmable Wireless Keypad, especially when it comes to assigning non-numeric keys like "Tab" to the programmable buttons. Here's how you can try to resolve this issue:
1. Ensure Latest Software/Drivers are Installed:
- Check for Updates: Visit the HP support site and make sure you have the latest drivers and software installed for the HP 430 Programmable Wireless Keypad.
- HP Accessory Center: Ensure you are using the latest version of the HP Accessory Center software, which is typically used to program and manage HP peripherals like the HP 430.
2. Check Keyboard Compatibility:
- Use Built-in Laptop Keyboard: Ensure that you’re using the laptop’s built-in keyboard and not an external keyboard when trying to assign keys.
- Try Different Key Combinations: Sometimes, certain software might require specific methods or sequences to recognize non-numeric keys. Try holding down "Shift," "Alt," or "Ctrl" while pressing "Tab" during the recording process to see if it’s recognized.
3. Reset and Reprogram:
- Reset to Defaults: If you haven’t already, use the software to reset the keypad to its factory defaults and then attempt to reprogram it from scratch.
- Clear Previous Configurations: If there are any existing profiles or settings, clear them to avoid conflicts.
4. Test on a Different Program:
- Use a Simple Text Editor: Open a basic text editor like Notepad or any other simple program that recognizes keystrokes and try to program the keypad using this application. Sometimes, more complex software may interfere with key recognition.
5. Check for Software Conflicts:
- Disable Security Software: Temporarily disable any antivirus or security software to see if it’s blocking or interfering with the key recording process.
- Close Background Applications: Ensure that no other software, especially those that manage or intercept keyboard input (like key mappers), is running in the background.
This process should help you determine if the keypad is functioning as expected or if there’s a limitation or issue that needs to be addressed. If the issue persists and you're still unable to program non-numeric keys, it may be best to contact HP Phone Support directly.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

I am having the same problem and have tried all the solutions recommended by the hp support in the other reply, I am assured that it is HPAC issue on the mac side as the keystroke works fine on HPAC on windows. HP support please update the HPAC software on Mac Appstore.

Thanks for your reply, here are my findings:
1. Yes the latest software/drivers are installed. I tried deleting and downloading the HPAC multiple times. All other drivers are updated, on the latest release of Mac OS.
2. Yes I'm using the built-in keyboard, I also plugged in an external just to check, still nothing. and yes I tried holding shift, alt, or control. Still not recognizing
3. I reset the keyboard to defaults multiple times, and deleted the HPAC application multiple times.
4. How does that make any sense? I'm going to click start recording and then change to another application? If I change to another application, even it it WERE recognizing, why would that work? But I tried it, and it didn't work.
5. I disabled all background applications and disabled security software. Still not recognizing.
My assumption, as someone else has pointed out too, is that the HPAC is not compatible with Mac OS. I will be returning my keyboard and being sure to never purchase another HP product again, unless this can somehow be fixed within my return window.
Also, I contacted the phone support, and the agent hung up on me.
Thanks for your help.
