Hello HP Community,

I am facing an issue with my HP desktop, and I’m hoping someone can guide me in the right direction.

Earlier today, my PC installed a Windows update. After the restart, the system no longer boots properly. It shows the HP logo, then starts automatic repair, but eventually returns to the same loop. I have not installed any new hardware or software besides the Windows update.

Here’s what I have tried so far:

  • Restarted the PC multiple times

  • Performed hard reset

  • Tried entering BIOS (works)

  • Tried Startup Repair (still loops)

  • Checked all cables and connections

I have not made any changes to BIOS settings or internal components.

My Questions:

  1. Is there a recommended HP recovery method for this issue?

  2. Should I try using HP Cloud Recovery Tool or is there another fix before that?

  3. Could this be related to a corrupted boot file?

  4. What steps do you recommend before performing a full system reset?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out, and I’m sorry to hear you’re stuck in a repair loop after the recent Windows update. This kind of issue is unfortunately common when an update doesn’t install correctly, but there are several steps you can try before doing a full system recovery.

Here are a few recommendations:

1. Try Windows Recovery Options

Since you can access BIOS, check whether you can also reach the Advanced Startup Options screen (usually by pressing F11 at boot). If it loads, try:

  • System Restore (restore to a point before the update)

  • Uninstall Updates (especially the latest quality update)

  • Command Prompt (for manual boot repair)

2. Check for Corrupted Boot Files

If you can open Command Prompt from recovery, you can attempt a boot repair:

  • bootrec /fixmbr

  • bootrec /fixboot

  • bootrec /scanos

  • bootrec /rebuildbcd

These commands help repair common startup and bootloader issues.

3. Run a Disk Check

Also from Command Prompt, try:

  • chkdsk c: /f /r

This checks and repairs disk errors that may cause the startup loop.

4. HP-Specific Recovery Options

Before using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool, try:

  • HP System Recovery (F11 → “Troubleshoot” → “Recovery Manager”)

    • If Recovery Manager is still intact, you may be able to restore Windows without wiping personal files.

If F11 doesn’t work or Recovery Manager isn’t available, then using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool is the next step. It will reinstall Windows and restore your system to factory state.

5. When to Use HP Cloud Recovery

Use the HP Cloud Recovery Tool if:

  • Recovery Manager is missing or fails

  • System Restore or Update Uninstall cannot complete

  • Boot repair commands do not resolve the loop

This is usually a last resort because it will reinstall Windows completely.
