Hi @Robert437,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion 24-xa All-in-One Desktop PC is running slowly, there are several things you can check and steps you can take to diagnose and improve performance.

Check for Background Processes: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see if any processes are using excessive CPU, memory, or disk resources. Sometimes background applications or processes can slow down your system.

Disk Space and Health: Make sure you have enough free disk space. If your drive is almost full, it can cause slowdowns. Also, consider running a disk check:

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  • Type chkdsk /f and press Enter. Follow the prompts to schedule a disk check on restart.

Temporary Files: Deleting temporary files can help speed up your system. Use Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files:

  • Search for "Disk Cleanup" in the Start menu.
  • Select the drive you want to clean up.
  • Check the boxes for temporary files and other items you want to remove, then click OK.

Startup Programs: Disable unnecessary startup programs that might be slowing down your boot time:

  • Open Task Manager.
  • Go to the Startup tab and disable programs you don’t need to start with Windows.

Update Drivers and Windows: Ensure that all your drivers and Windows updates are up to date. Outdated drivers or system files can cause performance issues.

Check for Malware: Run a full system scan with your antivirus software to rule out any malware that might be affecting performance.

Performance Settings: Adjust your system’s performance settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced system settings.
  • In the Performance section, click Settings and choose "Adjust for best performance" or manually adjust settings to balance performance and appearance.

Memory and Storage Check: Verify that your RAM and storage are functioning correctly. You can use tools like Windows Memory Diagnostic to check your RAM, and for storage, ensure your SSD/HDD is healthy.

Check for Overheating: Ensure that your PC is not overheating. Overheating can cause performance throttling. Check the cooling fans and vents for dust buildup.

System Restore: If the issue started recently, you might consider performing a System Restore to a point when your PC was running smoothly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
