Good morning.  I opened HP Support Assistant and I clicked on updates.  I wanted to manually check if any were available since it said 0 and I only have it set to check weekly.  When I do the next thing to pop up is the option to Restart your computer now or later.  It only lets me choose Restart later as I assume it is because there is no updates and no reason to.  But how can I get to the option to check for updates?  Thank you and I hope everyone is having a good weekend.

HP Support Assistant Reboot Behavior

If HP Support Assistant asks to reboot when checking for updates, it is often because updates are being installed or finalized. HP Support Assistant is designed to keep HP PCs and printers updated, and important updates can be set to install automatically by default. It also performs a weekly background scan for new messages and updates. Some updates require a restart to complete properly.

You can review or change how updates are handled in HP Support Assistant settings:

  • Open HP Support Assistant
  • Go to Settings or Update settings
  • Review the Software Updates options
  • If automatic updates are enabled, HP recommends leaving them on, but you can turn them off and manually install updates instead

If the reboot request happens repeatedly, HP Support Assistant also keeps an Action Log where postponed, installed, failed, or deleted updates can be reviewed. That can help identify whether the same update is repeatedly failing or waiting to finish.

You can also use Windows Update alongside HP Support Assistant, since both may deliver updates needed for your system. HP recommends running both to help keep the PC working smoothly.

Does the action log show an error or list the update that is "stuck"?
