Hi @hanskims,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The installation error 0x80070103 on your HP desktop usually occurs when Windows Update tries to install a driver that is already installed or is incompatible with your hardware. It’s a common Windows Update issue and not harmful, but it can block other updates if not resolved.

Why This Happens

  • Windows attempts to install a duplicate driver for the same device.
  • The offered driver has a lower compatibility rating than the one currently installed.
  • Corrupted Windows Update cache or services.

HP Recommended Fixes

1. Ignore If the System Works Fine

If your device is functioning normally, you can safely ignore this error. It often means Windows tried to install an unnecessary driver.

2. Pause and Resume Windows Update

  • Settings → Windows Update → Pause updates for 1 week, then Resume.
  • This refreshes the update queue.

3. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  • Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run.
  • Apply suggested fixes and restart.

4. Hide the Problematic Driver Update

Use Microsoft’s official Show or Hide Updates tool: Download from Microsoft
This prevents Windows from repeatedly trying to install the same driver.

5. Manually Update Drivers

  • Open Device Manager → Locate the device (likely USB or HP hardware).
  • Right-click → Update driverSearch automatically.
  • Or download the latest driver from HP: 👉 Official HP® Support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
