HP Z2 G8 Tower Workstation Desktop PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

It sounds really stupid, but the tower doesn't have a disc-eject button, and I can't use file explorer because it doesn't come up for me to choose to eject. I opened it up and it does have a disc tray, but I'm lost on how to open it

This is strange.  The parts list for Z2 G8 show the optional

L89731-001
ODD DVD+/-RW SM DL 9.5mm Slim Tray

Here is the ODD without a bezel https://www.ebay.com/itm/155218217629

Here is the ODD with the bezel and you can see the eject button

https://pcxssolutions.com/odd-dvd-rw-sm-dl-9-5mm-slim-tray-v-l89731-001/

If the file explorer does not show the ODD then verify the power and SATA cables are connected and the SATA port is enabled in BIOS for internal use and not for RAID or ESATA.

Power the system off and back on and immediately check the device manager for the optical drive.  Possibly the drive is not waking up after the system goes to sleep.  That can cause a drive to "disappear" from the system.

To open the disc tray on the HP Z2 G8 Tower Workstation Desktop PC, locate the small button or pinhole near the disc tray, press it or insert a paperclip into the pinhole to manually eject the tray.
