I asked these questions on Ten Forums:

https://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/198485-hp-image-assistant-how-do-you-un-install-previous-ver...

. . . and gotten some answers (paraphrased below), but I think I can get a definitive answer here.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I installed the current version, HPIA 5.1.6, a few days ago, and it didn't over-write 5.1.5

How do you un-install HPIA 5.1.5?

If I go to the SW folder:
1.) I don't see an un-install exe
2.) If I run the 5.1.5 installer, there is no option there to un-install

I don't see it, or 5.1.6, in Program Files

. . . [Try using Revo Uninstaller]

But, what if you don't want to use a 3rd party program?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

But, why doesn't it show up in Program Files?

Like with MS / Programs and Features / View Installed Updates - wouldn't there be some place that shows HP Updates?

Nothing in HPIA shows them, nor in HP Support Assistant.
They must be humanly accessible somewhere.
Or, would HP have another program available for this purpose?
It would be good to have this as common knowledge, rather than to rely on 3rd party.

. . . [HP Image Assist doesn't appear as an installed program. Each version gets unpacked into the folder you specify. Just delete folders for the old version. There's no problem doing this.]

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Previously, when doing HP updates, and not being able to install something,

I have deleted the folder, so that I knew the contents of the extracted folder would be new.

I never noticed any problem, but it seemed like I should be going through Programs and Features.

I guess that's not true. They're like Portable Files (self-contained), perhaps?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

These look like all the HP folders on my C:,
some from using the previous Software Download Manager (SDM) - I think that's what it was called:

0 in C:\HPSDM
504. MB in C:\hpswsetup
39.9 MB in C:\SoftPaqDownloadDirectory
9.56 GB in C:\SWSETUP

I have wondered if I can get rid of some SP's that make up the 9.56 GB

Any idea if I can delete the others?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

These are the only programs (6 of them) that show up for HP in my Programs and Features:

HP BIOS Configuration Utility / HP Inc. 06/08/17 15.7 MB 4.0.15.1
HP Connection Optimizer / HP Inc. 08/28/22 2.0.13.0
HP Display Assistant / Portrait Displays, Inc. 04/20/18 38.3 MB 3.20.016
HP Documentation / Hewlett-Packard 07/16/20
HP Hotkey Support / HP Inc. 04/11/20 16.6 MB 6.2.55.1
HP Performance Advisor / HP Inc. 09/21/19 15.1 MB 2.1.4431

If I figured out the SP for these 6 programs, do you think I could delete all the others with no problem, to free up space?

And, I think I could even delete the SP for these 6 programs, with no problem - If I wanted to delete those, you go through Programs and Features for that, apparently.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Do you know of an HP web page that confirms this?

. . . [You don't need to keep any files in swsetup once installed since the drivers can be downloaded again. Only the BIOS and hotkey programs are really essential.]

hi

I just tested with the latest version.
And that's what a user seems to indicate..
There is no installation, the file is extracted in the folder c:\SWSetup\SP142446
I had done a test before, by unzipping the file manually, in a chosen directory, then launched the HpimageAssistant file
The result is the same
so just delete the said folder!

The SW folders are the unzip location for hp files
So normal, that most of the time there is no uninstall file
Most can be deleted, but best kept somewhere else
Hp can delete some over the years, so if necessary, it becomes more difficult to find them

Methods to fix-

Method 1: Install the HP Support Assistant
When the error message pops up, you're prompted to install the HP Software Framework from the link provided. Unfortunately, this link doesn’t work. The good news is the HP Support Assistant will work in its place.

Head to the HP Support Assistant page. Click the Download HP Support Assistant button to install.

hp support assistant website
Once the file is installed, restart your computer, and your hotkeys should be functional again.

Method 2: Install the HP Hotkey Support Driver
If your hotkeys still aren’t operating properly, look for specific driver files on the HP Website: HP Hotkey Service and HP Hotkey Service UWP.

To find the correct driver for your computer, you’ll need to find the exact model of your device. If the model number isn’t printed on your casing anywhere, you can easily find it in your system information.

Search for System Information from the Start menu and open the matching result. From this new window, locate your model number next to System Model.

Screenshot of System Info
Once you’ve found your computer’s model number, go to the HP Support Website to find the driver you need. Scroll down to Identify your product and enter your model number. Then click on the Software, Drivers, and Firmware tab. This will bring up a list of drivers compatible with your device.

Click on Software-Solutions. Look for HP Hotkey Support and click Download. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

When the file installation is complete, restart your computer, and your hotkeys should be working again.

hp support assistant, does not have the same functionality as the software mentioned here, they are two totally different utilities

Yes, Rachael - They're different programs, and hot keys are not my issue here

Promethee - Yes, it looks like most of the SP's are like Portable Apps (self-contained:  https://portableapps.com/ ) - so, ok to just delete the folder.  The ones that are not like Portable Apps appear in Program Files, so, de-install them there, and they probably don't need the extract, for when you want to de-install them.  Do you know of an HP web page somewhere that confirms that this is how they work?

I don't want to mix everything up, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.
but, I don't have the hp page header, explaining how it works, but from experience I know a few points
See for example a pilots page, bios

Driver - HP Z240 Tower Workstation | HP® Customer Support

1. Download the file by clicking the "Download" or "Obtain Software" button and saving the file to a folder on your hard drive (make a note of the folder where the downloaded file is saved). 2. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to unpack the files to C:\SWSETUP\SP140257. 3. Select "Launch HPBIOSUPDREC" under "Windows BIOS Flashing". Alternatively, the BIOS binary file is located in the following directory: C:\SWSETUP\SP140257\HPBIOSUPDREC\N51_0184.bin 4. ...

it works like this for all hp drivers
you run the program, and the file should extract like this..
In general it is automatic, the installation is done from here
if you delete the folder here, you are no longer able to do a full install from here
This is why I advise to save at least the executable spxxxxx.exe in case it is deleted by hp

But otherwise, the extraction folder is not necessary then for the operation of the computer or the program / driver already installed

sorry if i'm not clear enough
