I configured an offline HP Image Assistant (HPIA) repository using HPCMSL with OfflineCacheMode enabled and synchronized Drivers, BIOS, and Firmware updates. The repository was accepted by HPIA, and all required SoftPaqs were successfully downloaded to the local repository.
- HPIA GUI can successfully analyze the system when using the patform reference XML (894f_64_11.0.25H2.xml).
- All expected updates are detected and displayed.
- The repository contains all corresponding SoftPaqs, including BIOS and firmware updates.
Although updates are detected, they cannot be downloaded or installed from the offline repository.
When selecting Download in the GUI, HPIA displays:
Knowledge Base database could not be downloaded from HP.com.
Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: source
and reports that an Internet connection is required.
The CLI behaves similarly:
HPImageAssistant.exe /Operation:Analyze /Action:Install /OfflineMode:"\\server\HP_Repository"
HPIA exits with code 0 but never proceeds beyond the initialization phase and does not install any updates.
The offline repository seems to be configured correctly. HPIA recognized it, and it contains all required SoftPaqs. However, HPIA 5.3.7.802 still attempts to access HP online services (Knowledge Base and download sources) and is unable to perform updates completely offline.
Thank you very much for your help.

Hi @Fabian46
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query.
The offline repository appears to contain the required SoftPaqs, and HPIA 5.3.7 can successfully detect the updates. However, HPIA is still attempting to access the online HP Knowledge Base during the download/install phase, which suggests the offline repository may be missing required metadata or that offline mode is not being fully honored for update installation. As a result, HPIA reports that an Internet connection is required and does not proceed with the installation.
To better understand the issue, could you please confirm the following?
- Was the offline repository created and synchronized using the same version of HPIA (5.3.7.802) and HPCMSL?
- Does the issue occur for all update types (Drivers, BIOS, and Firmware) or only specific updates?
- Is the affected device able to access the repository location and all downloaded SoftPaq files?
This information will help determine whether the issue is related to repository metadata, offline-mode configuration, or a product limitation in the current HPIA version.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi Pallipurath!
Thank you for your response.
Please find my answers below:
- Yes, the repository was created and synchronized using the current versions of both HPIA (5.3.7.) and HPCMSL (1.9.0).
- The issue occurs for all update types. Initially the repository only contained Drivers, but I rebuilt it from scratch and added Drivers, BIOS and Firmware updates as well. The behavior remained unchanged.
- Yes, the test device has full access to the repository share and all downloaded SoftPaq files. The repository contains all SoftPaqs that HPIA identifies as applicable, including BIOS update SP174207.
Thank you for your time.
Greetings, Fabian

Hi @Fabian46
Thank you for responding.
By default, HPIA attempts to contact HP online services every time it executes in order to retrieve the daily updated Reference File and Knowledge Base database. When HPIA is executed without explicitly passing the /ReferenceFile parameter, it defaults to querying HP online services. In an air-gapped or restricted network environment, this online lookup fails, triggering the error Knowledge Base database could not be downloaded from HP.com. Value cannot be null. Parameter name: source and causing the CLI execution (/Action:Install) to abort silently or exit without applying updates.
- Explicitly Pass /ReferenceFile in Command Line Execution To execute HPIA completely offline without querying HP online services, you must supply both the /ReferenceFile switch (pointing to your local platform XML file, such as 894f_64_11.0.25H2.xml) and the /OfflineMode switch (pointing to your repository share).
Corrected CLI Command:
HPImageAssistant.exe /Operation:Analyze /Action:Install /ReferenceFile:"\\server\HP_Repository\894f_64_11.0.25H2.xml" /OfflineMode:"\\server\HP_Repository"
Note: Ensure the platform reference XML file is stored locally on the client or within the local repository share so HPIA can access it without an internet connection.
- Verify CVA Metadata Files in the Repository Confirm that your repository share contains both the SoftPaq binaries (.exe) and their associated .cva initialization files. HPIA uses the CVA files to determine silent installation switches, execution parameters, and platform applicability rules.
- Configure Local Reference File Selection in GUI When using the HPIA GUI in an offline setting, ensure you browse to and select the local platform XML file directly rather than letting the GUI attempt to download the reference catalog from HP online service

I hope it helps.
Have a good day.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I have already verified the suggested settings and tested the recommended approaches, but the issue persists.
Environment:
- HP Image Assistant 5.3.7.802
- HPCMSL 1.9.0
- HP Elite Mini 800 G9 (platform 894F)
- Windows 11 25H2 (build 26200)
The repository was rebuilt from scratch using HPCMSL with OfflineCacheMode enabled. It contains the required Drivers, BIOS and Firmware SoftPaqs, including the corresponding EXE, CVA and HTML files.
The repository is accessible both via the network share and locally at C:\HPIA\Repo. The .repository, .repository\cache and .repository\mark directories are present.
HPIA successfully reads the local reference file (894f_64_11.0.25H2.xml), captures the system configuration and displays the expected recommended updates, including BIOS, firmware and drivers.
However, during analysis, HPIA displays:
Knowledge Base database could not be downloaded from HP.com. Value cannot be null. Parameter name: source.
Clicking Download subsequently reports that an internet connection is required.
I have already tested:
- /ReferenceFile together with /OfflineMode
- /Action:List and /Action:Install
- /Force
- A local copy of the repository instead of the network share
- OfflineCacheMode confirmed as enabled
The result is unchanged. The HPImageAssistant.exe and .dll appeare for around one secound in the task manager and then it closes. No HPIA debug log is generated. Basic TCP connectivity to hpia.hpcloud.hp.com:443 and ftp.hp.com:443 succeeds.
Could you please clarify which exact metadata files or repository components HPIA 5.3.7.802 requires to perform a fully offline analysis, download and installation? Is there a known issue with the Knowledge Base initialization in this version, or a documented way to prevent this online lookup when using a synchronized offline repository?
Thank you.
