HpHwDiag.exe ─ Entry Point Not Found

This message pops up unexpectedly for months.  All that seems to work is to click ok and be done with it but that doesn't solve the problem.

What can be done to make this pop up message go away or fix the issue?

Hi @7ur59

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HPHwDiag.exe – Entry Point Not Found error typically occurs when the system tries to execute a function from an application or library that is not available or corrupted. This error is related to the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool, which is used to run hardware tests on HP computers. The issue could be caused by an outdated or corrupted version of the tool, missing system files, or issues with the registry.

Here are several steps you can take to fix the issue:

1. Reinstall or Update HP Hardware Diagnostics

The first step is to ensure that the HP Hardware Diagnostics software is up-to-date and properly installed. You can try reinstalling or updating it:

  • Download the latest version of HP Hardware Diagnostics from the official HP website.
  • Go to HP SupportSoftware and Drivers → Enter your product details (model number or serial number) → Download the latest version of HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Once downloaded, install the tool and restart your system to see if the issue is resolved.

2. Check for Windows Updates

Ensure your system is fully updated, as missing system updates can sometimes cause such errors.

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Update & SecurityWindows UpdateCheck for updates.
  • Install any available updates and restart your computer to see if the issue persists.

3. Perform a System File Check (SFC)

Corrupted or missing system files can cause the "Entry Point Not Found" error. Running the System File Checker (SFC) tool can help fix these issues.

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator: Right-click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  • In the command window, type the following command and press Enter:
  • The scan will take some time, and if it detects any issues, it will attempt to repair them.
  • Once the process is complete, restart your computer and check if the error still appears.

4. Run the DISM Tool

If SFC doesn't fix the problem, you can use the DISM (Deployment Imaging Service and Management Tool) to repair Windows system images.

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Type the following command and press Enter: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  • Wait for the tool to complete the process (it can take up to 30 minutes). Once it's done, restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello. Thank you for such a thoughtful and thorough reply. It's the best response to date concerning this issue; the issue has persisted for over six months. Step three of your response left something out, noted in the text below:
