Rec'd a postcard from Carvalho vs. HP regarding some type of settlement. When I go to the website provided, it asks for your credit card number. Why would a law firm ask for this information if it's a class act lawsuit? Sounds like a scam to me, especially if the "cash benefit" is as little as $10. Can anyone confirm or deny anything about this?

Re: "Carvalho vs. HP Settlement" Postcard – Is It Legit or a Scam?
Thanks for bringing this up — your caution is very wise indeed!
You're absolutely right to be suspicious. In a legitimate class action settlement, you should never be asked to provide your credit card number to file a claim or receive a benefit — especially for something like a $10 settlement.
Here's what to consider:
🕵️♂️ Red Flags That Suggest a Scam:
Requesting a credit card number to receive money? That’s a big red flag.
Poorly designed or generic website not clearly tied to a reputable claims administrator.
Pressure to act quickly or misleading language like “you must pay to get your benefits.”
✅What a Legitimate Class Action Looks Like:
You may receive a postcard, letter, or email informing you about your eligibility.
You’re usually asked for minimal info (name, address, maybe a serial number or proof of purchase).
No payment or financial information is ever required to claim a small settlement.
Official settlements are typically listed on sites like:
https://www.ftc.gov (for warnings about scams)
🔍What You Can Do:
Double-check the URL on the postcard. Does it look official?
Google the case name (e.g., “Carvalho vs HP class action”) and look for results that lead to law firms or reputable class action websites.
Don’t enter any personal info or credit card details unless you're 100% sure it's a secure, legitimate site.
Bottom line: It’s best to ignore or report it unless the site can be verified through an official legal or government source. Asking for your credit card for a class action payout -especially $10, is a huge red flag.
If you can share the exact URL (or a partial one), I may be able to help verify it further.

There are many scams and misinformation out there, but being fair, yes, the website www.hpsettlement.com is actually legitimate and authorized by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. It pertains to the class action lawsuit Carvalho, et al. v. HP Inc., Case No. 5:21-cv-08015-PCP, which addresses allegations that HP advertised misleading discounts on its website.
Key Details:
Eligibility: U.S. consumers who purchased HP desktop computers, laptops, mice, or keyboards at a discount on HP.com between June 5, 2021, and October 28, 2024.
Settlement Amount: HP has agreed to a $4 million settlement fund.
Individual Payouts: Eligible claimants may receive between $10 and $100 per product, depending on the item and the number of claims filed: https://www.claimdepot.com/settlements/hp-discount-settlement. For example, class members who purchased an HP ENVY Desktop TE02-0250xt can receive a $100 payment, while those who purchased an HP X3000 G2 Wireless Mouse can receive a $10 payment.
Claim Deadline: June 9, 2025.
Final Approval Hearing: Scheduled for August 21, 2025.
The settlement website is managed by Kroll Settlement Administration LLC, a reputable firm appointed by the Court to handle the claims process. If you received a notice and are eligible, you can file a claim through the official site. Be cautious of any other websites or communications requesting sensitive information; always ensure you're interacting with the official settlement site.
