Hi @Gene1820,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your keyboards. Let's try a few steps to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue.
Basic Checks
- Restart Your Computer: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve hardware recognition issues.
- Try Different Ports: If your keyboards are USB, try plugging them into different USB ports.
- Check the Keyboards: Ensure that the keyboards work on another computer to confirm they're not faulty.
Device Manager Steps
- Uninstall and Reinstall Keyboard Drivers:
- Open Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).
- Expand the Keyboards section.
- Right-click on your keyboard device and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
- Update Drivers:
- Right-click on the keyboard in Device Manager.
- Select Update driver and then Search automatically for updated driver software.
BIOS Check
- Access BIOS:
- Restart your computer and enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F2, F10, DEL, or ESC during boot, depending on your model).
- Check if the keyboard works in the BIOS. If it does, the issue is likely with the Windows software.
- Reset BIOS Settings:
- In the BIOS, find the option to reset to default settings (usually labeled as "Load Default Settings" or something similar).
Windows Troubleshooting
- Run the Keyboard Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Keyboard and run the troubleshooter.
- Check for Windows Updates:
- Sometimes, Windows updates include fixes for hardware issues. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
Power Management Settings
- Disable USB Selective Suspend:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings (next to your selected plan) > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting and set it to Disabled.

Software Interference
- Safe Mode:
- Boot into Safe Mode (hold Shift while clicking Restart, then go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart > press 4 to enable Safe Mode).
- Check if the keyboard works in Safe Mode. If it does, there may be software or drivers interfering with the keyboard in normal mode.
System File Check
- Run SFC and DISM:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run the following commands one by one:
- sfc /scannow
- DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Hardware Check
- Internal Connection:
- If you're comfortable opening your computer, check if the internal USB connections (for desktop PCs) are secure.
External Factors
- Interference: Ensure there are no other electronic devices nearby that might be interfering with the USB connection.
Final Steps
- Use an External USB Hub: Sometimes using an external powered USB hub can help bypass motherboard-related USB issues.
- System Restore: If the problem started recently, you might try restoring your system to a previous point where the keyboard was working.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
