Does the message "Your Lenovo 81VU is not a supported device" mean that I shall be unable to connect this computer to a newly bought HP Deskjet 2820e? It functions as a printer but not as a scanner. It does not appear in Windows 11 under Printers and Scanners. I am totally confused as may be obvious - assistance would be much appreciated.

May I add to my previous query. In Windows 11 Bluetooth and Devices my HP Deskjet 2820e is listed but when I click on Add Device the message is "That didn't work check with manufacturer for additional set up instructions." Any advice very gratefully received.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

I suspect that the printer setup is indeed incomplete and the "add device" is not enough to complete the process.

-----------------------------------------------------

A couple of ideas

First,

The printer cannot connect to 5GHz -

Make sure the printer is on the network --

  • Connect the printer to your separate SSID named network for 2.4GHz.
  • Assign the printer its own manual / static IP address.

Next,

  • Install the full driver printer software.
  • Optionally install the HP Universal Scan Software.

Dual Band Network - Considerations

Reminders

Do not ignore your router --

A router that is weak, outdated, poorly located, or incorrectly configured can cause all sorts of odd network behavior issues.

If the printer supports it, connecting using Ethernet is generally a better choice.

If your router supports it, create a separate SSID named network for each frequency.

Connect the printer to the SSID network you want the printer to use on the network.

Wireless

Some printers, particularly older models, only support Wireless at 2.4GHz

Some printers support Wireless at both 5GHz and 2.4GHz – but not at the same time

Regardless, if the printer won't work or cannot connect to your 5GHz SSID named network, connect to the 2.4GHz network.

If you are running a Dual Band Network,

Check that the router is set up to broadcast all frequencies it supports.

Next,

If your router supports it,

On your router:

Create a separate SSID named network for each frequency supported by the router

What?  Create one SSID named network for 5GHz and one SSID named network for 2.4GHz

and

Connect the printer to the SSID named network on the frequency / band you want it to use.

In general,

  • 2.4GHz is less fussy about obstacles and supports a longer distance (separation) between router and device (printer)
  • 5GHz is faster

Printer - Full Feature Software

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

NOTES:

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver. No Sign-in required.

Reinstalling?

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.
  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

It seems your Lenovo 81VU may lack full compatibility with the HP Deskjet 2820e's scanning function in Windows 11. Updating drivers or checking HP support could resolve the issue.

Thank you both for  super comprehensive replies too comprehensive for me I am afraid. I am totally hacked off with this problem having reached a point where all appeared to be well with the addition of HP Smart only to find it impossible to download. This is a new Deskjet to replace the Canon printer TS 3150that has worked well until last week. I shall try the more straightforward of your suggestions before returning the HP to Amazon in despair.

Thank you again for your suggestions.

Do we have Windows 11 how-to videos for the DeskJet 2800 series?

Customer is struggling and printer is complaining.

Thanks for any Words-of-Wisdom.

@Ralphish

You are welcome.

Incompatible?  Possibly, though, it would be unusual - Windows commands the hardware on your Lenovo -- Unless there is something unusual about your Windows 11 installation, the system is likely able to manage the printer software.

The network is a common "sticking point".  There is naught unusual about the printer except its lack of a touchpad printer control panel -- a common feature of economy printers -- and the requirement that the printer be connected to 2.4GHz.  Printers of this type typically communicate with lights and buttons on the printer and the Embedded Web Server (EWS) for anything that requires (or is easier done) typing.  It is true that should the network be incompatible, the printer would not be able to do more than blink and complain.

HP Smart must be installable from the Microsoft Store

True -- If you cannot get the application onto the computer, then - true, you'd not be able to use it to help manage and use the printer.  You do not need HP Smart - you can manually configure the IPv4 network (as shown previously) and you can install the full driver printer software.  These are not automatic plug-and-play but both are generally doable with a bit of skill and patience.

Hi @Ralphish

Thanks for using the HP Support Community.  @Dragon-Fur  has provided a lot of good suggestions.

Here's some more suggestions to try:

1.  Reset the wireless to defaults and the use HP Smart to setup and connect to the network

Download HP Smart app from Microsoft Store.

Here's a resource to show how to do a wireless reset:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WWqNB8h2SE

2, Connecting the printer to wireless network with WIndows 11:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtsHnA9wNN8

After getting the printer connected to the network with HP Smart, use the Scan feature

If the above doesn't work, try a wireless reset again and then use a mobile phone.

3.  Connecting printer to Wireless using an Android phone:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Quqvsotg1k0

Go to time 6:08 to setup with HP Smart mobile

After successfully getting the printer connected to wireless network, use the Printer Scan function to scan documents.

Hope that helps!
