Hi BeemerBiker  = problem sorted - appears after a recent  Microsoft update that they are protecting their priority in some way as if I set Edge as my default search engine. that I had previously set for another search engine the problem resolves. So assume if those with a problem set Edge as their default the would also resolve the problem. It is concerning that most of the issues we get these days are caused by Microsoft updates in Windows 10?

This seems to be a microsoft problem that is being reported all over

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/microsoft-edge-closes-immediately-upon-o...

I have not had this problem but I am running 23h2, the latest "11"

Edge is "chrome" that was re-written by Microsoft.  You might try firefox.
