Hi @Mcka

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for reaching out. I understand you want to turn on the keyboard backlight on your computer, and it’s not currently lighting up.

Let’s walk through the most reliable ways to enable it.

Step-by-Step: How to Turn On Your Keyboard Light

1. Use the Keyboard Shortcut

Most HP laptops use a function key to toggle the keyboard backlight.

Try pressing F5 or F4 (some models use F3, F9, or another key).

If nothing happens, hold Fn + the backlight key (e.g., Fn + F5).

Look for a key with a glowing keyboard icon—that's your backlight toggle.

2. Check BIOS Settings

Sometimes the keyboard backlight setting is disabled at the BIOS level.

To enable it:

Shut down your laptop.

Press the power button, then immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.

Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.

Look for a setting called "Keyboard Backlight" or "Action Keys".

If found, enable the backlight and save changes (usually with F10).

3. Check Windows Mobility Center (if available)

Press Windows + X > Select Mobility Center.

If your system supports backlit keyboards, you might see a brightness control for the keyboard.

4. HP Quick Launch or System Utilities

Some models require HP drivers/utilities to manage the keyboard light.

To install:

Go to: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

Enter your laptop model.

Under Software-Solutions or Software-Utility, download any listed tools like:

HP System Event Utility

HP Quick Launch Buttons

After installation, restart your system and try the keyboard shortcut again.

5. Not All HP Laptops Have Backlit Keyboards

Some HP models don’t come with keyboard lighting. To check:

Look at your space bar or top row keys—if there's no light icon, the keyboard may not be backlit.

You can also search your model specs here: https://support.hp.com/in-en

If you share your laptop’s full model name (e.g., HP Pavilion 14-dv1000), I can guide you with exact instructions and links. Let me know how it goes!
