Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, I was unable to update the BIOS on my HP EliteBook 840 G5 laptop over the network. Why is this happening? Also, I can’t launch the diagnostic utility from the BIOS — PC hardware diagnostics uefi.
I’m getting an error message: “The protocol specified in the URL is not supported.”

Hi @UncleAy,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for providing the details. Since you are seeing “The protocol specified in the URL is not supported” when trying to launch HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, and the BIOS update is also failing over the network, we need to identify exactly where the process is failing before recommending a BIOS recovery or update method.

Could you share the following?

  • The exact BIOS version currently installed. You can check this by pressing F10 at startup and viewing the BIOS information.
  • The exact error/message shown when the network BIOS update fails.
  • A photo or screenshot of the “The protocol specified in the URL is not supported” message in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, if possible.
  • Confirm whether the laptop is connected to the network through Wi-Fi or Ethernet when you attempt the BIOS update/diagnostics.

Also, let us know whether HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI was previously working on this EliteBook 840 G5 or if this is the first time you have encountered the error.

Once we have the exact messages and current BIOS version, we can determine whether this is related to the network-based BIOS update, the UEFI Diagnostics environment, or the installed BIOS version and guide you with the appropriate HP-supported steps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
