Microsoft Windows 11

I have a new HP laptop, model says 15T-fd000.  Microsoft Windows 11 home.

I can't open, manage, move, attach, or copy my existing .jpg files.

When I double click on a photo (from File Explorer) I get a message that says:

"Photos can't open this file because the format is currently unsupported, or the file is corrupt"

When I use PAINT I can't open my .jpeg files on the new computer. - "This is not a valid bitmap file"

In File Explorer when I select >View > Large Icons I see the files but it won't show me the pictures.

When I try to attach a JPEG file to an email I get an error message.

So basically on my new HP computer I can't do anything with my JPEG files.

I have an older model HP laptop, still functional.  All my picture files (same as the ones I'm trying to access with the new computer) work fine - I can open, edit, attach, etc.

I emailed myself a couple of JPEG pictures from my old computer.  When I download / save those on the new computer then the files act like they should - I can see them in Explorer, I can open them with Paint, etc.

I searched and tried this (both Repair and Reset), nothing changed:

Reset/Repair the Photos App: Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > Microsoft Photos > Advanced Options, then click Repair or Reset.

So.......what's going on?  I don't want to email myself all my pictures just to see them on my new computer.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @LeeStrom64,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with opening and managing your .jpg/.jpeg files on your new HP 15T-fd000 laptop. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check File Corruption:
It's possible that the files are corrupted. You can try opening the files on another device to see if they work there.

  2. Verify File Format:
Ensure the files have the correct .jpg or .jpeg extension. Sometimes, file types might be mismatched or incorrectly labelled.

  3. Install or Update Drivers and Software:
    • Graphics Drivers: Make sure your graphics drivers are up-to-date. You can update them through the HP Support Assistant or by visiting the HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd0000 RCTO Base Model | HP® Support.
    • Photo Viewer Software: Ensure that the photo viewing software or app you're using (like the Windows Photos app) is up-to-date.

  4. Use Alternative Viewers or Editors:
If Paint and the default Photos app don't work, consider using alternative programs like GIMP, View, or Adobe Photoshop as a temporary solution to check if the files open there.

  5. Check for Windows Updates:
Ensure that your Windows operating system is fully updated. Sometimes new updates can fix compatibility issues.

  6. File Associations:
Ensure that .jpg and .jpeg files are associated with the correct applications:
    • Right-click on any .jpg file → Choose "Open with" → Select "Choose another app" → Select the app you want to use and check the option "Always use this app to open .jpg files" before confirming.

If the issues persist after trying these steps, it might be helpful to contact HP support for further assistance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
