I use an Omnibook X which I purchased specifically due to it being a 2 in 1, a tablet and a PC, which runs windows and can also act as a low end gaming laptop. I commonly use this laptop for gaming or drawing, which typically includes me using my touchscreen, especially on drawing.

Earlier today, I was experiencing an issue where my index finger was being recognized as a pen..? A small cursor would briefly appear under my swiping finger and start to select things, zoom in, etc, just being glitchy, but it would be fine if I swiped with my thumb or tapped with anything else.

Despite this, a few minutes later I experienced a problem - my touchscreen just wasn't working! Going into Device manager I saw this on my touchscreen properties (the thing itself is called I2C HID Device, just like the touchpad) with the following error code.

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

A request for the HID descriptor failed. This typically occurs when there is a problem with the device firmware.

After digging online for about 4 or 5 hours and trying every method including, but not limited to;
Enabling and Disabling the device

Disabling the device and restarting the laptop

Uninstalling the device and restarting the laptop

Updating the drivers and restarting the device

Unplugging the power, holding the power off for 15 seconds and turning back on for 30 seconds

Using command prompts in order to force-repair some drivers

Enter the bios (which I couldn't find anything relating to touchscreen in, my touchscreen also didn't work there, I think? I'm not sure if it's meant to or not, leaning toward not

Run command prompt for diagnosis (It recognized the driver was faulty, but it was not able to do anything except prompt me to accept updates from other microsoft apps. I used this command: msdt.exe -id devicediagnostic)

Updating the drivers through properties -> update drivers -> browse my computer -> select from a list -> next and this shows up "Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them. This device cannot start (Code 10)

Scan for hardware changes

And a few more I forgot and probably tried in the crux of my anger and coping. None of these solutions worked, and I cannot factory reset the PC (it got to 100% and stayed there for about a half hour.) And I was planning to reinstall Windows with a clean wipe of every module if nothing else could work.

Thank you for taking the time to document everything you've already tried. From what you've described, you've been very thorough with the troubleshooting, and the Code 10 - "A request for the HID descriptor failed" message does point toward a firmware, BIOS, or device communication issue rather than a simple driver problem.
 

Before considering a Windows reinstallation, I'd recommend trying one important step first.
 

Please check and update the BIOS to the latest version available for your specific OmniBook model. HP has identified cases where updating the system BIOS can help resolve touchscreen and HID device communication issues.
 

You can log in to Official HP® Laptop Drivers and Software Download | HP® Support, search for your exact OmniBook model, and download the latest BIOS firmware available for your system. If you're unable to locate the correct BIOS or are unsure which file to download, please let us know, and we can help identify the correct package for your device.
 

Could you please share the following?

  • The exact OmniBook model or product number (P/N).
  • The current BIOS version is installed on the PC.

You can find the BIOS version by:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter.
  3. Look for BIOS Version/Date and share the information shown there.
     

Once we have the exact model or product number and the current BIOS version, we can:

  • Verify whether a newer BIOS is available.
  • Help locate the correct HP drivers and firmware for your specific system.
  • Check for any model-specific recommendations related to the touchscreen and the I2C HID Device.

Given that the touchscreen behavior changed from intermittent false pen detection to a complete Code 10 failure, I'd recommend starting with the BIOS verification before attempting a clean Windows installation.
