OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0034

Today I received a optional update for HP Inc. Driver Update (1.85.4367.0) For HP App Enabling Service in the Software Components Device and I installed it on my desktop and my wife's laptop HP Envy with no problems however after I installed this update I started getting two Event 1013 MSinstaller errors at each restart and at boot up on both computers. I saw in my event viewer it was trying to install HP Display Control Service which is a 3rd party program from www.Portrait.Com and why this was happening is beyond me. What I did was went to the Software Components Device in Device Manager and I rolled back the HP Inc. Driver Update (1.85.4367.0) back to (1.83.4311.0) in the HP App Enabling Service on both computers and when I did that the 1013 MSinstaller errors did not happen on both computers upon restart and reboot. I have never heard of or used HP Display Control Service and do not want it or need junk like that from some 3rd party whether legit or not. Why would HP send out an optional driver update like that tries to install a 3rd party program.  HP needs to fix this optional Driver Update (1.85.4367.0) for the HP App Enabling Service in the Device Managers Software Components  and resend it back out to users again as an optional update and not try to install this HP Display Control Service junk from a 3rd party and cause 1013 MSinstall errors. Personally I do not want to see these needless errors every time we  start or restart our computers.

Respectfully,

Don

I wonder about that too. It caused me major problems. I had to completely reinstall everything because it couldn't even be removed. The result was system crashes and constant notifications. Why is this listed as a driver update under optional updates in Windows? It's an app, not a driver! I never installed it and don't want it. Especially on a notebook, it's complete nonsense. Hours of work for an app like this. I'm really angry.

Thank you Bailo for your reply. I could not uninstall that so called driver update as well as it was not even listed in the Uninstall Update Window. The only way I fixed mine was to roll back that driver in Device Manager then  I went to Software Components Device then I opened  HP App Enabling Service then I opened the Driver tab in that and selected roll back and restarted my Omen and everything went back to normal. I am sorry you had to go through all that and I totally agree with your statements.

Respectfully,

Don

Yes, I did that this time too, and it was OK again. The update was installed automatically again, even though it is optional. That shouldn't happen, but unfortunately it did. It's sad that no one at HP is commenting on this.

Hello! Once I saw that I could not uninstall the update I went and rolled back that driver to the latest earlier version and restarted my computer. My computer says that it was installed when I view update history in Settings but not that I have rolled the driver back so it never reinstalled again. HP should comment on this and if they want to update this driver then they should update it without using a third party addition that from the looks of it i do not trust. I have NVIDIA and their control panel is ten times better than that trash HP Display Control Service (which is a 3rd party program) that tried to install itself with that optional update.

Thanks @DonT54 for reporting this issue.
I use an OMEN Gaming Laptop 16-k0008nl (6R3Z6EA).
Today, Windows Update automatically installed this driver for me, too, and following your instructions, I immediately restored version 1.83.4311.0, even before restarting the laptop.
Now I'll try to see if everything is OK.
HP hasn't been careful with updates for too long.
For example, HP Support Assistant isn't working properly. With "Verify Operating System," it suggests installing BIOS F.27, highlighting that BIOS F.28 is installed, while BIOS F.29 is already available on the website https://support.hp.com.
Another example: when I go to check if I need to update some drivers (https://support.hp.com), it asks me what version of Windows 11 I have and only suggests 23H2, and now we're at 25H2...
In short, HP should wake up and fix these programs that could be causing problems...
Best regards
Thanks!

Hi @DonT54,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry, but I can only provide support related to HP products or services. For issues regarding optional driver updates that may involve third-party software, it is usually advisable to manage updates directly through the Windows Update or the specific driver update tools provided by HP, such as the HP Support Assistant.

Please help us with the Product serial number or the product number in a private message for further assistance.

Thank you for your reply???? This update came though via the Windows Update and it did not show in HP Support Assistant. How can one manage updates directly through the Windows Update when it is not even listed? There is no product serial number for this this optional update trying to install needless third party bloatware so there is no need to send you a private  message about the Driver Update (1.85.4367.0) For HP App Enabling Service.  This optional update is flawed and it is causing problems on HP computers. Like I said  HP needs to fix this optional Driver Update (1.85.4367.0) for the HP App Enabling Service in the Device Managers Software Components and resend it back out to users again as a fix to the optional update and not try to stealthy install this HP Display Control Service junk from a 3rd party and cause 1013 MS install errors. Why would I even want HP Display Control Service when I have NVIDIA and their control panel is way better.

HI @DonT54,

Thank you for the update.

When updates come through Windows Update, they might occasionally include optional driver updates that are not listed in tools like HP Support Assistant. These updates can sometimes introduce unwanted third-party software. Here's how you can manage these updates:

Windows Update Settings:

  • Open Settings on your Windows computer.
  • Go to Update & Security.
  • Click on Windows Update.
  • Click on View optional updates if available. This will show drivers that can be updated.
  • Be selective about which updates to install. If you're unsure about a specific driver, you might want to search more information about it before deciding to install.

HP Support Assistant:

  • Although HP Support Assistant might not show certain Windows optional updates, it helps manage HP-specific updates efficiently.
  • Launch HP Support Assistant and go to Updates from the My Dashboard tab to ensure all HP-related software and drivers are up to date. This might prevent the installation of unnecessary updates offered through Windows Update.

Driver Management:

  • If an unwanted driver has been installed, you can roll it back.
  • Open Device Manager, find the device, right-click, and select Properties.
  • Navigate to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if this option is available.

Prevent Automatic Updates:

  • To control when updates occur, you can set your Internet connection as metered under Settings > Network & Internet > Your network connection > Properties. This method helps limit automatic downloading of updates.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
