Z420 Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and installing all updates including drivers and Bios the PC fan runs continuously with nothing running.

Check all resources.  memory CPU and hard drive utilisation are all low.

Any ideas.

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

That's strange.

Try rebooting the PC a couple of times.

Reset the BIOS to defaults.

Any run away processes in Task Manager?

Regards

Tried restating then reset bios to default then restarted again.

No run away tasks

Resources all low.

Fan starts out slow then gradually speed up over about 30 sec.

How are the CPU temps? Are the fans / heatsinks / vents blocked with dust?

HP Recommended

Don't know how to check CPU temps

Fans and vents are all clear.

fans were fine until windows 10 upgrade

@Kripto64,

In the BIOS  via f10 you will find the Temperatures tab on the first menu.

In the power menu you will find the Thermal tab.

This system is feedback driven thru Solution and Kudo flags. It's the only means of knowing if you have been served. Please click Accept as Solution, if your problem is solved. To say THANK YOU, press the "thumbs up symbol" to render a KUDO. You can render both Solution and KUDO..

Have you updated the BIOS to the latest version? I've got a Z420 with Windows 10 on it with no issues with the fans.

Here's the link to the BIOS:

Had done the bios update within windows when I did the upgrade.

Did it again from F10 setup menu.

Still no change.

Downloaded Core Temp App.

Min Temp 54° C

Max Temp 72° C

Load Max 3%

Gave the computer a de dusting with the air can

now max temp is 38°C

Got better for a little while but still noisy

That's a massive difference. do you own an air compressor or know someone that does? I would suggest pulling the side off, and blasting it with an air compressor gun. That's the best & easiest way IMO.

If you don't then REMOVE all fans + the CPU heatsink from the case, give them a THOROUGH clean with a paintbrush and air can. clean the old thermal paste off (best with IPA) then re-apply new thermal paste to the cpu.

Also make sure all the holes / vents in the case are clear of dust.

This should also help.
