RX 550 drivers/catalyst software

Hello, I just recently went through some trouble of upgrading the CPU and GPU on this Pavillion 590-P0076 so that it could install Windows 11. CPU is now a Ryzen 2600 and the GPU is an RX 550 which I believe is the one that also comes in other HP desktops from the factory. Has an HP product number and everything. I selected this card thinking to maximize compatibility on top of the fact it didn't require any addition power besides the PCIE socket, and the card is actually not too old.

However, idk of this is a consequence of being on Win 11, but simply installing the catalyst software/driver downloaded from AMD does not seem to work properly. When I restart the machine after the install, the software is completely gone as if there was nothing installed. I did make it stick after I did a DDU clean install and kept windows offline, but that seems to result in some bugs. Such as mouse movement and video playback was jerky, and no more than 8 watts of power usage when I stress test the GPU which severely restricts the clock speed.

If I remove the catalyst software and let Win 11 install its own driver from the net, the mouse and video playback become normal and smooth, but I lack fine control over the GPU's options and performance. Is there some version of the catalyst software that can work in this system?

The only suggestion I can offer would be to try the W11 driver from HP:

AMD Video Driver and Control Panel for Radeon RX series.

Ooh that's a good find! Hmm, according to device manager, the driver that windows installed is: 31.0.21910.4002

Bigger number = newer maybe? I'll try it out and see what it does, but I don't think that'll bring AMD control software with it. Thanks though

Ok, unfortunately that driver doesn't seem to take either, even after a DDU. Device manager still says "microsoft basic display adapter"

You're very welcome.

Sorry the HP driver didn't work and yes, it would be an older version of the driver.

I suggest you use the AMD driver that gave you decent performance without the other bugs.

What you can do is to check the hardware ID for the specific model RX550 your PC has and if it isn't listed on that copy and paste I posted last night then the driver I gave you was for other versions of the RX550 GPU.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device.

How to Find Drivers for Unknown Devices in the Device Manager

You can check it under the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or if the GPU is labeled as the RX550.

If the ID does match one of those listed, then unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with this problem.

Also, if it is not too much trouble, post the part number for the HP GPU you bought and I'll see if I can find what model HP desktops it was used in and if there are different drivers than the ones I gave you, I will post those.

Edit: I also tried to see if MSI afterburner could install and that was also a dead end. I didn't think a prebuilt PC could be this locked down, but it is a very nonstandard motherboard and firmware from everything I've seen so far.

OK, so it looks like that card is used in a quite a few different HP consumer desktop PC's.

HP PartSurfer

Give this driver a shot:

It's an old W10 driver from 2021 from one of the PCs on the list that had that graphics card part number installed.

I looked for newer PC models on the list but the few W11 driver files I checked for those PCs had no support for that card.

Feel free to look up other PC's on the list and try those drivers, but I would use the free 7-zip file utility to extract the exe file into its driver folder and see what hardware ID's are supported by the driver before installing the driver.

That driver supports the hardware ID you posted.

When you check for the ID's you can do a 'Find' in Notepad.
