My desktop is an HP< PRODESK. Last week when started up, I received error message that operating system can not be found. I was able to create a rescue or start up usb from another  computer. . I am able to get into the cmd command prompt and saw the names  of all my files so I HOPE THEY ARE STILL RECOVERABLE.I want to try to transfer them to an external drive before i try to reinstall windows, but need the correct syntex in cmd. For example. F; drive/user/xcopy.  My external drive will be named  F:

You can use the xcopy command in CMD, for example:
xcopy C:\Users\YourName\Documents\*.* E:\Backup\ /E /H /C /I
(Change C:\... to your source and E:\... to your external drive letter).
