Today I used the HP website to get info on the correct way to swap in new ink cartridges. In a couple of minutes I was in a chatbox with a LIVE rep, not a "virtual assistant". I was told by the rep (whose alleged name and pic were plainly visible right in front of me) to call an **bleep** tollfree # for questions about my new printer. I have always been very careful with my wifi and computer network security. But I had NO REASON TO DOUBT I WAS TALKING WITH A REAL HP Tech Support guy. He gave me his name and his alleged HP Employee number. Anyway - the cartridge problem was very simple and easily resolved, but before I figured it out on my own, this guy was telling me that the cartridges would NOT click into place because my drivers were outdated and that I might have a virus inside my pc. LONG STORY SHORT: the guy and his partner were definitely scamming me and tried to get me to pay $200!! I had let them inside my computer via LOGMEIN....because again, I had never encountered a scam that originated with a legit corp. website chatbox!! This was new to me, but luckily I figured it out before any real damage was done. DOES HP KNOW THAT SCAMMERS CAN ACCESS THEIR UNWITTING CUSTOMERS VIA CHATBOX NOW?? Pretty outrageous, and HP needs to take very swift action ASAP!!! Can someone share any information about this new hacking / scamming mode?
