I need some help understanding why I cannot open a pdf document. I can open some, but not others. This particular one was sent to me from a medical provider via email.

Welcome to the HP User Community.

The source of the problem might be the PDF reader in your web browser.

For example, most browsers include a built-in PDF reader -

The built-in PDF reader in the browser might not be able to understand the file format

Conversely

If you have added any "PDF reader" extension, that extension might be having trouble opening the file in the email.

Note

To some extent, the following is also relevant if you are trying to open a PDF file from within an installed mail client (for example Outlook or Thunderbird).  Windows Mail does not generally include its own PDF reader and would be relying on your installed PDF software (for example, Adobe Reader DC ).

If you have not done so,

Consider / Try

Download and Save that "cannot open" PDF file.

Open File Explorer

Navigate to the folder where you saved the file (likely Downloads)

Open the PDF file with Adobe Reader DC

================================================================

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

  • HINT:  Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
  • Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not open / view / print PDF files directly from the software.
