Recently my pc has been getting alot hotter, im assuming this is due to the dust that's collected inside over the years and I was wondering if I would be voiding my warranty if I were to open it up and clean it etc, ik its a pretty stupid question but I don't want to risk it as I know some companies have stupid reasons for voiding warranties.

To be specific, the original HP Warranty was for 12 months. 

Did you purchase the "HP Care Pack" to extend the warranty by 2 or 3 years?

Thus, your computer could be "out-of-warranty".

 

So, think about trying this:

  1. open the CD/DVD tray.
  2. power-off the laptop, preventing it, if necessary, to try to close that tray.
  3. disconnect the external power-supply.
  4. remove the battery. 
  5. with the battery removed, hold-down the on/off button for 5 seconds, to "drain" any residual electrical power.
  6. if there is an access-door on the bottom that covers access to the sticks of RAM, you may want to remove that door.
  7. if you think that your computer is dusty, put on a mask to cover your nose & mouth, and wear protective eye-glasses.
  8. now, take a can of compressed air, and "blow" everywhere - air intake vents, air exhaust vents, under the keyboard,  into the "open" CD/DVD tray, around the sticks of RAM.
  9. reassemble.
  10. test.

To specifically answer this question
Hp encourages users to maintain the computer, it is not specified, whether under warranty or not (except error)
Therefore, the fact of cleaning the computer, is not in itself a reason, but on condition, of not damaging something, during the operation

So if i were to damage something it wouldnt be under warranty but if I just open it up and clean it its fine?

@harisc1 -- you are welcome to open a claim against the HP Warranty, but it's up to HP whether to accept your claim.

 

A cracked screen on a laptop?  Probably "rejected", as user-inflicted damage.

 

Any paper bits labelled "do not remove" that are torn, e.g., covering an access door to the RAM? Probably "rejected", because you have torn those labels.

 

A battery that is physically "bulging" -- implying total failure of its chemistry? Probably accepted, especially if HP knows that this battery is on their "bad" list.

 

An original disk-drive or video-card or motherboard that has quit working? Probably "accepted".

 

Any scratches on the screws that fasten the side-panels of a desktop? Might be rejected.

 

Every case is unique, and is at their discretion.


Of course, if your computer's warranty has expired, and there is no "secret warranty" (such as broken plastic hinges that turned out to be common on the X360 model of HP laptops), you are on your own.
