I hope someone can help me figure out what’s happening with my laptop. I bought an HP laptop three days ago, and recently, websites have been acting strangely.

When I try to open a webpage: (Edited) the text appears compressed on the left side of the screen, making the page look completely broken.

The only change I’ve made recently is adding a Passport Backup drive. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a simple fix for it?

@Terryhere205,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since your HP laptop is brand new, let's go through a few troubleshooting steps to narrow down the issue:

Try a Different Browser

  • If you're using Chrome, try Edge or Firefox to see if the issue persists.
  • If it works fine on another browser, resetting or reinstalling the problematic browser might help.

Check Zoom Settings

  • Press Ctrl + 0 (zero) to reset zoom settings in your browser.
  • Sometimes, accidental zoom settings can mess up the webpage layout.

Disable Browser Extensions

  • Open your browser in incognito mode (Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome) and check if websites display correctly.
  • If they do, an extension might be interfering. Disable them one by one to find the culprit.

Adjust Display Scaling

  • Go to Settings > System > Display
  • Under Scale & Layout, set scaling to 100% (some laptops default to 125% or higher, which can cause issues).

Check GPU Acceleration

  • In Chrome, go to chrome://settings/system and disable "Use hardware acceleration when available."
  • Restart the browser and check if the issue persists.

Test with and Without the Passport Backup Drive

  • Unplug the external drive and restart your laptop.
  • Sometimes, external drives can interfere with system performance or browser rendering.

Update Graphics Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
  • Expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU, and select Update driver.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
