HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-c0000 (2W0H9AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've asked about this issue before. I have troubleshooted it possibly on other forums. I have also updated windows recently due to OS issues, and possible driver issues, yet i don't really know specifics. I understand that there can be multiple software and hardware compatibility issues.

The windows HP hardware diagnostics has not functioned for quite a while, and I have updated to the latest version of Windows 10. HP Hardware diagnostics for windows has not ran since a windows update quite a while ago.

I did update some device drivers, and Microsoft community or some windows tech before has said that WIndows updater uses drivers that are provided by HP. I saw the last time that i asked about this that there were various possible reasons like net framework errors and a device, but i don't know. That device error does not make sense since I don't know why HP Diagnostics would crash  when I am using a laptop based on a device not being connected. the logical reason behind that is that some software setting is not connecting with the program, so it thinks a device is not connected perhaps.

-i've come up with a search related to a wrong driver due to that. I do not know if some wrong driver would crash HP windows hardware diagnostics.

Some people said that for some windows issues, i can reinstall BIOS, or update that, and HP Support Assistant used to have an update for that but it removed it. Something like it wasn't needed. Maybe it was for firmware.

I cannot contact HP support, as my system is out of warranty. HP support will connect me to premium services to talk about windows troubleshooting. If there is anyone here that might have any information about this particular issue, i would appreciate it.

@JoshuaCaleb,

All right, let's do this first.

1.) Type in Disk Cleanup in your Windows search bar, click "OK" on the disk cleanup drive selection, make sure you check all the "Files to delete" boxes, then also click on "Clean up system files" (this may take a while to process), you may have to hit "OK" again, and make sure that all boxes are checked again.  Hit "OK" to the "Are you sure you want to permanently delete these files?" message and hit "Delete Files".  Depending how many files are going to be deleted, this process may take while.

2.) Then type in cmd in your Windows search bar, then right-click on the Command Prompt App, and left-click on "Run as administrator", and then click on "Yes" to continue.

a.) Type in and then enter the command:

sfc /scannow

This may take a while to complete. Once completed:

b.) Copy/paste/enter the following command:

DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

This may take even longer to complete.  Not to worry if it feels like/appears that this command is stuck halfway completion. Take your dog for a walk if necessary.

Once completed, restart your PC.

3.) Now type in Update in your Windows search bar and run "Check for updates".  Regardless whether Windows detected anything to update or not, click on "Advanced options" and see if there are any updates hidden under "Optional updates".

Point being, you should download/install all Windows updates.

4.) If you haven't done so already, download and runOfficial HP® Drivers and Software Download | HP® Customer Support.

5.) If you haven't done so already, download and runhttps://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html.

Restart your PC, and please report back to see if these interventions made a difference.

Kind regards,

i saw that the HP driver site had only bluetooth and sure connect as the recommended downloads, but a firmware update from this year. It may be what was removed from HP support assistant. The Intel updater only is showing a graphics driver, which i just updated a version through Windows Update. It recommends to use Windows Update. By the way, I saw an error prior to updating in the event log about an intel permissions (which may be for microsoft community as it was not happening the same time as the last time I tried to run the HP diagnostics).

What does running disk cleanup do?

HP Recommended

@JoshuaCaleb,

Running disk cleanup will get rid of useless files that otherwise just take up space at best or causing issues at worst.

You also want to download/install/use weekly this most useful freeware utility program: CCleaner -if you haven't done so already.

How did scannow and restorehealth work out for you?

 The diagnostic tool does not yet run in Windows. I believe that it likely is the same error as quite a while ago. "Device not functioning." i do not really know if all of the errors in the event viewer really show the problem. I have seen a reference to Net framework or runtime, an error 155, and a windows library for HP diagnostics.

-it looks like restore health didn't find anything from the event log, but the other thing repaired some corrupt files.

after a windows update around the same time, i may have an issue i will have to wait to see if the scannow fixed or not, as the system is suddenly hanging. I found this can be due to some settings (which could also relate to BIOS conflicts). it may require to roll back some updates.

Hello, i am following up here.

I am noticing an unusual behavior with the HP Diagnostic tool since the updates and scans.

HP diagnostics is trying to run now by itself. It did not do that before. So it would only run manually, then it would quit.

Yet, now it runs automatically, then it stops like before. I have pretty much done those steps that you have asked.

HP updates have a BIOS or firmware update that was removed from the assistant which is available on the update site, but it is not what is showing I should update too. It seems that some sites also say that is a good idea, but not always.

hello, following up again here. there is maybe a potential indication of a driver issue. I have followed all the steps here. Advice would be appreciated.

@JoshuaCaleb,

If the aforementioned steps didn't fix things, I would save my data/files you don't want to forfeit to a flash drive or external drive, reset CMOS, and see if this will fix it.  If not, I would reinstall Windows.

This issue seems to be potentially due to Windows itself being updated. Do you know where HP Diagnostics for windows is located, as in the root directory? Windows has a program settings troubleshooter.

I am wondering if that might help instead of doing a clean install or repair installation. It is in windows 10, but I looked this up, but it is not programdata directory.

@JoshuaCaleb,

Sorry, I do not know where HP Diagnostics is located.
