HP Pavilion 31.5 inch All-in-One Desktop PC 32-b0000i (3N9R3AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, my desktop will not detect a 2nd monitor. I tired with my work laptop and now have purchased a Samsung monitor and it keeps saying not detected. I have restarted and updated the desktop. I have a brand new HDMI cord and have tried different HDMI slots, nothing is working. Please advise. I need this for work and I am very tech illiterate.

@sfears, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue of your HP Pavilion 31.5" All-in-One Desktop PC (32-b0000i) not detecting a second monitor (Samsung), based on your description:

Confirm the HDMI Port is Output-Capable

Many All-in-One PCs have HDMI-in ports (for using the PC as a monitor) rather than HDMI-out (for connecting a second monitor).

  • On your model, the HDMI port is likely HDMI-in, which means it won’t send a signal to an external monitor.

Check your product specs here: HP Pavilion 31.5 inch All-in-One Desktop PC 32-b0000i (3N9R3AV) - Setup and User Guides | HP® Suppor...
Look under I/O Ports to confirm HDMI type.

Use a USB-C or DisplayPort (if available)

If your PC has a USB-C port with DisplayPort support, you can use a USB-C to HDMI adapter to connect the second monitor.

  • Check the side or back of your PC for a USB-C port.
  • If available, try this:
    • Use a USB-C to HDMI adapter.
    • Connect your Samsung monitor via HDMI to the adapter.
    • Power on the monitor and PC.

Detect Display Manually in Windows

Sometimes Windows doesn’t auto-detect displays. Try this:

  • Right-click on the desktop → Display settings.
  • Scroll down and click Detect under “Multiple displays”.
  • If detected, choose Extend these displays.

Update Graphics Drivers

Outdated drivers can prevent detection.

  • Go to Device ManagerDisplay adapters.
  • Right-click your graphics card → Update driverSearch automatically.
  • Or visit HP Support Assistant to auto-detect and update drivers.

Test Monitor and Cable

You mentioned testing with a laptop, which is great. If the monitor works with your laptop, it’s not the monitor or cable.

If your PC only has HDMI-in and no USB-C with video output:

  • You cannot connect a second monitor directly.
  • You can use a USB-to-HDMI external graphics adapter (like a DisplayLink adapter) to add a second display.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
