Dear Community,

I have a Z840 Workstation that I want to use as a Windows Server with the 2022 STD version. The installation went OK and I can boot to the desktop. However, when looking at the Device Manager, there are a long list of devices under "Other devices" that have missing drivers.

I was able to download and install a BIOS update with SP137086 and the graphics card driver (NVidia) with SP163361.

Can anyone point me to the rest of the drivers for the motherboard and the rest of the hardware that exist in this computer?

For reference, I was able to install Windows 10 Pro without any problems and no missing drivers.

Thank you,

Laurentiu

You're very welcome.

Start with this driver first and restart the PC.

Intel Chipset Drivers for Microsoft Windows

sp101759.exe

That should install the PCI Device, SM Bus Controller, Base System Device, and Performance Counters.

For the PCI Simple Communications Controller & PCI serial Port, you need this driver:

Intel Management Engine Software

sp74499.exe

The RAID Controller needs this driver:

Intel Rapid Storage Technology Enterprise

sp96420.exe

Now, if the auto install doesn't work, try manually installing the driver from each device in the device manager.

Click on the device needing the driver, click on the driver tab, click on Update driver, select the 'Browse my computer for drivers' option, and browse to the applicable sp###### driver folder that was created when you ran the files.

The folders will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp######

Make sure that the Include subfolders box is checked and hopefully, the drivers will install that way.

Hi:

You will probably have to hope that manually installing the W10 drivers for each device that is missing drivers works if the auto install method doesn't work.

But before I can begin to help you I will need you to post the device descriptions Windows labeled the other devices, so I can figure out what drivers they need.

Additionally, it would be helpful if you post the hardware ID's for the devices.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device.

How to Find Drivers for Unknown Devices in the Device Manager

Hi Paul,

Thanks for answering.

I will start with the ones that look more important to me:

  • PCI Device - with these IDs:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D7C&SUBSYS_2129103C&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D7C&SUBSYS_2129103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D7C&CC_FF0000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D7C&CC_FF00

  • PCI Simple Communications Controller

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D3A&SUBSYS_2129103C&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D3A&SUBSYS_2129103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D3A&CC_078000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D3A&CC_0780

  • RAID Controller

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&SUBSYS_2129103C&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&SUBSYS_2129103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&CC_010400
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&CC_0104

  • SM Bus Controller

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D22&SUBSYS_2129103C&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D22&SUBSYS_2129103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D22&CC_0C0500
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D22&CC_0C05

  • PCI serial Port

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D3D&SUBSYS_2129103C&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D3D&SUBSYS_2129103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D3D&CC_070002
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D3D&CC_0700

I am hope that installing drivers for the above items will clear some of the other entries labeled "Base System Device" and "Performance Counters"

Thank you,

Laurentiu

Dear Paul,

Things are well improved. All drivers are installed. As a result, all etries under "Other devices" disappear with the exception of one.

The "RAID Controller" entry is still there. The Hardware IDs are as follows:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&SUBSYS_2129103C&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&SUBSYS_2129103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&CC_010400
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&CC_0104

However, under "Storage controllers" there is one entry labeled "Intel(R) C600+/C220+ series chipset SATA RAID Controller" with the following Hardware IDs:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2826&SUBSYS_2129103C&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2826&SUBSYS_2129103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2826&CC_010400
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2826&CC_0104

As you can see, the Hardware IDs are the same. I tried to "Uninstall" the "RAID Controller" but, after a refresh, it showed up again.

During my first attempt to install this driver, it reported that there was a newer version installed. At the second attempt, I selected to replace it since I did not know where the other driver came from and thought I would end up with a consistent driver set for the RAID Controller. As a test, I wanted to see if using the "Update driver" option for the entry "Intel(R) C600+/C220+ series chipset SATA RAID Controller" would do anything and it did. It updated the driver to a newer version and renamed the Storage controller to "Intel chipset SATA RAID controller".

It wants to restart the computer. I will report back.

Thank you,

Laurentiu

It rebooted fine. However, the two entries in the Device manager are still there, as described above. At this time, I could just ignore this and move on with the rest of the server installation. I would not know, for now, what could be the consequences of me ignoring it. Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Laurentiu

You're very welcome, Laurentiu.

See if the drivers I zipped up and attached below work for both devices.

You will have to manually install these drivers from each missing device as there is no exe file.

I found this driver on the Microsoft Update Catalog website for Windows Server 21H2 and newer.

Microsoft Update Catalog

As you can see, the setup information files contains driver support for both ID's.

DriverVer = 10/04/2023,8.5.0.1592

[INTEL.ntamd64.10.0...14393]
;windows 10_64_14393 and later

%PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2826&CC_0104.DeviceDesc% = iaStorE_inst, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2826&CC_0104

[INTEL.ntamd64.10.0...14393]
;windows 10_64_14393 and later
%PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&CC_0104.DeviceDesc% = iaStorB_inst, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2827&CC_0104

Hopefully this driver file will install both of those devices for you.

Thank you Paul,

I downloaded the file. I may not be able to do it today due to holiday preparations. I hope for tomorrow.

Dear Paul,

That last driver worked. At the end Device Manager lists two controllers, Intel Chipset SATA RAID Controller and Intel(R) VROC sSATA Controller., in addition to previously recognized LSI Adapter, SAS2 2308 Mustang and Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller.

All devices are accounted for. Looks beautiful.

Thank you again for your help,

Laurentiu
