Hi @Satch6,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Does this error appear during Windows Update, HP Support Assistant, or when installing a specific update?
  • Has the laptop had any recent updates, power interruptions, or antivirus changes?
  • Are you able to update other apps, or do all updates fail?

What the error usually means

Error 0x80096004 often points to a problem verifying update signatures. This can happen if:

  • Windows update files are corrupted
  • System files are damaged

Troubleshooting steps to try

1. Restart essential update services

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter
  2. Make sure these services are Running and set to Automatic:
    • Windows Update
    • Cryptographic Services
    • Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
  3. Restart these services and try updating again

2. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters
  • Run Windows Update
This can automatically fix common update issues.

3.  Check system files

Corrupted system files can cause update failures:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run:

sfc /scannow

  1. If issues are found, follow up with:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

5. Temporarily disable third-party antivirus (if installed)

Some antivirus software can interfere with update verification.

  • Disable it briefly, retry the update, then re-enable it afterward

I hope this helps.
