I am trying to connect a cd/dvd player to my desktop.  I have purchased a connector which takes the yellow, red and white combo and changes them to a USB connector which I then [lug into the USB port on the computer.  But, doing so does not complete the circuitry somehow.  Should I assume this transfer device is no good or ic something like this unacceptable.

No, this simple  way won't work, the easy way is to use an external USB CD/DVD player otherwise you need a video capture card. Does your desktop already have available ports ? If not, you need a device which is similar to the follwing device
