How can I reset my computer settings to a previous date?

Windows System Restore is NOT a Time Machine -- in the sense, that such an app would return the entire PC to the state it was in some time ago.

When you do a Windows Update, the system files that are being updated, replaced, or deleted are saved off. This collection is know as a Restore Point.

When you then later do a System Restore, all that happens is that Windows overwrites the current system files with the ones from the Restore Point.

While this does partially reset the Windows OS, it does not have any effect on other stuff, like personal files.

Here is a link to an article comparing Windows System Restore to Apple's Time Machine:

In the Control Panel search box, type "recovery"

  • Select Recovery > Open System Restore
  • In the Restore system files and settings box, select Next
  • Select the restore point you want to use in the list of results
  • Select Scan for affected programs to confirm which apps and drivers will be removed
  • Click Close
  • Click Next to begin restoring the system files and settings
  • Click Finish to launch the system recovery process
  • Click Restart
