i currently have a 4 gb memory install can i add a 8 gb memory for a total of 12 or can i only add in equal amounts?

Hi:
For the memory to run in the higher performing dual channel mode, you should install memory in matching capacities (2 x 4 GB, 2 x 8 GB.
Below is the link to the product specs for your PC.

You can install as much as 2 x 16 GB of memory for a total of 32 GB.
If you want to add an 8 GB memory chip to the existing 4 GB memory chip, it should work, but it will only run in single channel mode.
