I can't get pics  to xfr from dvd to a folder. When I copied them,  they showed up as a shortcut on my desktop.  They won't open or xfr to another folder.  Each Pic has a check mark by it. I can't get rid of the check mark.

The little checks indicate that the icon is a "shortcut".

Shortcuts are markers to another location for the actual item.

What you have on the Desktop are "shortcut markers" and not actual photo files.

Check marks cannot be removed from shortcuts (at least not by any conventional means).

Opening the DVD folder might allow you to copy the files you find (in the DVD) to other locations.

I suggest you don't use "Desktop" as a Destination for the copied file.

Although the Desktop is technically a folder, it is better to copy your files from the DVD to your Pictures folder.
