Can't register HP USB External DVD-RW Drive.  SN not accepted

@Artemis47 -- watch out for "zero" versus "oh" & "one" versus "eye" in the serial-number.

 

If you register it, and it "breaks", then HP, will replace it, under the HP Warranty -- is that within one year?

If you do not register it, and it "breaks", which is highly unlikely, then just purchase another one.

 

So, there is nothing "fatal" about not registering it.

There is some "hassle" to interact with HP Support, if you ever need to exercise the warranty.

If it does "break", you probably would be tempted to immediately purchase a replacement, and use it.

But, if you have shipped the broken device back to HP, you will be "without" the device for a few weeks (especially at this time of the year -- pre-Xmas sales -- and more shipping-delays, due to COVID).
