Microsoft Windows 11

Recently the sleep option disappeared from the power menu options on my HP Pavilion. I have spent days trying to get it back without success. I followed all troubleshooters, online suggestions, windows 11 reinstall (repair version), HP Diagnostics, HP Support app, etc. Anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Hi @JMO81,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

When the Sleep option completely vanishes from the Windows 11 power menu, even after system repairs and HP diagnostics, it is almost always caused by an incorrect Power Plan setting or a hidden Connected Standby (Modern Standby) configuration overriding your hardware state.

Method 1: Re-enable Sleep in Classic Control Panel:

Sometimes Windows 11's modern Settings app gets out of sync, but the classic Control Panel can override this:

  1. Press Windows + R, type Control Panel, and press Enter.

  2. Set the top-right "View by" to Large icons, then open Power Options.

  3. In the left-hand menu, click Choose what the power button does.

  4. At the top of the window, click the link that says Change settings that are currently unavailable (this requires administrator privileges).

  5. Look at the bottom of the window under Shutdown settings. Check the box next to Sleep.

  6. Click Save changes.

Method 2: Adjust Modern Standby in the Registry:

HP Pavilion laptops rely on Modern Standby, which can cause the sleep option to hide if the firmware state misaligns with the OS. You can force Windows to use the correct power configuration:

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power.

  3. Look for the key PlatformAoAcOverride.

    • If it exists, double-click it and set its value to 1.

    • If it doesn't exist, right-click the space in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it PlatformAoAcOverride, and set its value to 1.

  4. Restart your computer and check if the Sleep option returns to your power menu.

Method 3: Restore Default Power Plans:

A corrupted power plan can lock out the sleep state. Restoring the defaults can force the feature to reappear:

  1. Press Windows + S and type cmd. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

  2. Type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes and press Enter.

  3. Restart your laptop.

Method 4: Update the Graphics Driver:

The Sleep function relies heavily on your display driver. If it is corrupted or outdated, Windows will remove the Sleep option to prevent crashing upon wake-up.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.

  2. Expand Display adapters.

  3. Right-click your graphics card (e.g., Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA) and select Update driver.

  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
