Microsoft windows 11 update kb5063878 caused catastrophic ssd failure at BIOS level for my omnistudio Copilot + AI PC. After OS reinstall omni studio could not turn on. HP bought back.
Given that kb5063878 cannot be uninstalled from 24h2 and 25h2 windows 11 builds, and large writes can trigger kb5063878 damage, it seems next best step is to insure ssd firmware is updated to post August 12, 2025 version. My SSD is HP 2 TB PCIe® 4x4 NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD. Does anyone know if firmware update exists and where to find firmware upgrade? it appears to be HP ssd, but HP does not list firmware upgrade.
This is completely unsettling because the pc is a Copilot + next gen AI PC. MS update kb5063878 was meant to protect/improve AI functions.Instead, it has rendered the system unusable for large write workflow.
I cannot safely move forward: MS not offering fix, cannot find SSD firmware upgrade. Need SSD firmware upgrade.

Hi @crisp3r,
This is a smart move before onboarding your new HP OmniStudio X All-in-One 32-c0000t. Here’s what I found:
Will the September 17 build ship with Windows 11 24H2?
Yes, almost certainly. HP’s current OmniStudio X configurations ship with Windows 11 Home or Pro and are aligned with Microsoft’s latest feature update cycle. Since 24H2 is the current GA build, your September build will likely include it by default.
Can HP provide a 23H2 recovery image?
- HP Recovery Options: HP uses the HP Cloud Recovery Tool to provide factory images. These images match the OS version that originally shipped with your device. For a new system built in September, that’s going to be 24H2, not 23H2.
- Official Downgrade Path: HP does not typically offer older Windows builds (like 23H2) for consumer systems unless the model originally shipped with that version.
- Manual Downgrade: If you want 23H2, you’d need to use a Microsoft ISO or third-party UUP method, but this would be a clean install and not HP-authorized for recovery partition preservation.
Impact on Warranty
- Hardware Warranty: Downgrading or reinstalling Windows does not void your hardware warranty. HP will still cover physical components.
- Software Support: If you install an unsupported OS version (like 23H2 when HP shipped 24H2), HP may decline OS-level troubleshooting. You’d need to restore the factory image for full support.
- Recovery Partition: Installing 23H2 manually will overwrite the HP recovery partition unless you back it up first. HP recommends creating a recovery USB before making changes.
Your Best Options
- Create HP Recovery Media First
Use the HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Support to back up the factory 24H2 image. - Install 23H2 Manually (If You Choose)
Use a clean ISO install, then add HP drivers from the HP OmniStudio X 31.5 inch All-in-One Desktop PC 32-c0000 (9T0G1AV) Software and Driver Downloads | H.... - Revert to HP Image Anytime
If you need warranty service or HP support, restore the original 24H2 image from your recovery media.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @crisp3r,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for sharing these detailed observations about the issue following the Windows 11 update KB5063878 on your HP OmniStudio X 32-c1000 AI PC. I truly understand how concerning and disruptive this experience must have been, especially given the impact on system stability and storage integrity. I’ll do my best to clarify and guide you.
Understanding the Situation
The update KB5063878 (part of the Windows 11 24H2/25H2 branch) includes several kernel and storage-level optimizations for devices with on-device AI accelerators (NPU) and high-performance NVMe drives.
However, in isolated cases reported across OEMs (not limited to HP), large write operations or firmware-level miscommunication between the Windows storage stack and specific NVMe controllers have caused critical SSD corruption or non-boot states after the update.
About Your HP 2TB PCIe® 4x4 NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD
The SSD in your OmniStudio X system is an OEM HP-branded NVMe SSD, but the firmware is tied to HP’s custom hardware configuration.
- Firmware updates for these drives are not distributed publicly.
- When a firmware update is released, it becomes available automatically through:
- HP Support Assistant (HPSA), or
- HP Image Assistant (HPIA) (for IT-managed environments).
At this time, there is no post–August 2025 SSD firmware update available for the HP 2TB PCIe 4x4 NVMe TLC drive used in OmniStudio X systems.
Recommended Next Steps
- Ensure BIOS and System Firmware Are Fully Updated
- Open HP Support Assistant → My devices → Updates.
- Install any available BIOS or Storage Controller updates (the latest BIOS typically includes NVMe controller microcode updates).
- Temporarily Pause KB5063878 Reinstallation
- If you are reinstalling Windows manually, avoid applying this update until HP or Microsoft issues a patch revision (expected in future cumulative rollups).
- If you are reinstalling Windows manually, avoid applying this update until HP or Microsoft issues a patch revision (expected in future cumulative rollups).
- Enable Write Caching & Monitor SMART Data
- After reinstall, use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics → Storage Test → Long Run to ensure SSD health.
- Avoid sustained large sequential writes (such as cloning, exporting large datasets, or AI model caching) until a verified firmware fix is published.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you for the detailed response Vicram the Great.
Before I execute your instructions, let's take a step back and ask a preliminary question.
I’m preparing to onboard a new HP OmniStudio X All-in-One Desktop AI 32-c0000t PC 31.5 ordered September 17, 2025. Is is a replacement for the destroyed HP OmniStudio X All-in-One Desktop AI 32-c0000t PC 31.5 purchesed on June 20, 2025. Should I assume the September 17th build will be 24H2? Given the SSD risk associated with KB5063878 in 24H2, I’d like to confirm whether HP can provide a 23H2 recovery image that:
- Preserves the HP recovery partition
- Is authorized for use on this system
- Will not affect my 3-year warranty or support eligibility
My goal is to install a stable, supportable build while avoiding known risks. Please advise if such an image is available or if there’s an official channel to request it.
